[CDATA[David O. Russell is one of the most interesting directors in America, responsible for such wonderful films as Flirting With Disaster and Three Kings. The man is currently putting the finishing touches on his latest movie Nailed (described as a contemporary Wizard Of Oz about a search for healthcare). Normally this would mean that it would be at least 3 years before he started a new project. However, thats not the case this time. Russell announced today that he has signed on to direct The Grackle. ]]

[CDATA[It's not a great time to be Tom Cruise. The former biggest star in Hollywood was recently dumped from a starring role in Columbia Pictures' spy thriller "Edwin A. Salt" in favour of Angelina Jolie. According to Page Six Cruise is currently floundering in Hollywood, having recently thrown a temper tantrum during a meeting with studio executives after they rejected the idea of filming a Mission Impossible 4. He's also seen the release of his completed $100 million drama Valkyrie delayed 3 times in the last six months. Apparently embracing scientology and denouncing psychiatry is bad for your career. [CDATA[Tim Burton really shouldn't be a blockbuster director. The guy has one of the oddest directorial visions in Hollywood. His movies play like the childhood fantasies of a latchkey kid raised on a steady diet of cartoons, horror movies, and German Expressionism. He brought Pee-wee to the big screen, discovered Batman's dark heart decades before The Dark Knight, and introduced the world to the eccentric acting of Johnny Depp. His movies really should play to marginal audiences of social outcasts and movie geeks, yet somehow the guy is one of the most commercially successful directors of all time. His Batman was such a massive success that it allowed his sensibility to enter the mainstream. He has a generation of imitators, and despite his latter day cinematic sins, the man has to be regarded as one of the most interesting filmmakers to ever work in Hollywood. ]]

[CDATA[For decades movie criticism has been defined by two Chicago film lovers sitting in balcony determining the success or failure of a movie with their ever-powerful thumbs. Siskel And Ebert first hit the airwaves in 1975 when they reviewed films on PBS and by the 1980s they had become an institution. Their nationally syndicated TV show was a ratings hit and practically every movie poster printed featured a thumb rating. Gene Siskel's untimely death in 1999 put a damper on the program, but after a parade of guest hosts Roger Ebert marched on with the much more placid and agreeable Richard Roeper at his side. The show retained its popularity until recent years and now it seems as though it has sadly gone they way of the dodo and Ore-os cereal. ]]

Its no longer necessary to fork over mountains of money to the Arthur Conan Doyle estate to use the character, so it is officially time for this cash cow to be milked. There are already a variety of Sherlock Holmes pictures set to shoot in Hollywood, but easily the most bizarre project has got to be a comedy rendition of the character staring Borat himself, Sacha Baron Cohan, as Sherlock Holmes (no seriously, this is real). ]]

It was the second major success for Marvel Studios this summer, following their shockingly good and successful Iron Man, that's made $297 million in only seven weeks. This was an important summer for Marvel as the studio was financing movies themselves for the first time. While Marvel executives were involved with the X-Men and Spiderman franchises, those movies were primarily funded and released by major Hollywood studios. But due to the enormous success of both franchises, Marvel has made enough money to start financing and producing movies themselves, depending only on Hollywood studios for distribution. ]]

[CDATA[The LA Times recently released a shocking report that Paul Newman has been diagnosed with cancer. The 83 year-old actor was a long-time chain-smoker and recently pulled out of directing a cinematic adaptation of John Steinbecks Of Mice And Men, so it seemed possible. Family friends were quoted as saying, "We have known he is seriously ill for several weeks but his loved ones are being very protective and saying very little and patients at New Yorks Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre claimed to have seen the actor. It certainly appeared to be a legitimate report, but then Newmans publicist released a statement saying that he was merely "being treated for athlete's foot and hair loss". The statement sounds fishy, but with no other official announcement regarding the legendary stars health, its difficult to say whether the rumors are true or not. Hopefully this is just fabricated tabloid story that was blown out of proportionbut well see. ]]
