[CDATA[With the snow gone and April showers subsided, you might be tempted to venture back outside. However, when the plebs heat up and your burn starts to peel, you will retreat back indoors. The sun is for California grapes and George Hamilton; everyone else needs more than a modicum of AC. Luckily, along with the fresh smell of garbage comes a host of fantastic film fare – and alliterations - from post-Sundance indies to big budget popcorn flicks. Celluloid decisions are getting difficult, but worry not: Martiniboys.com is here with your Summer Film Guide. Happy sitting. ]]

[CDATA[Even before we lost Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight was widely considered to be most anticipated movie of the summer of 2008. After his tragic and untimely death, the film has become the most anticipated cinematic event of the year. And well it should be. While it is ostensibly a comic book movie, the presence of Memento auteur Christopher Nolan elevates The Dark Knight a notch above most superhero fare. His rendition of the Batman origin in Batman Begins was so original, dark, serious, and thrilling that it rejuvenated a franchise long thought dead following the nipple-suited fiasco of Joel SchumacherÂ’s Batman And Robin (arguably the worst movie ever made). The thought of him returning to continue the story along with a new psychotic version of The Joker portrayed by the late, great Heath Ledger is simply too good for most cinemagoers to resist. ]]

[CDATA[After almost a year of using Whitestrips and brushing with a Howard Hughes-like obsessiveness, I finally managed to rid my once-white teeth of last year’s wine stains. And now the sousing and scrubbing begins anew. It’s once again time for the annual Santé International Wine Festival. ]]

[CDATA[Pushing buttons, developing characters, and generating excitement. That was part of the vision at the L'Oreal Fashion Week, day two. While previous Fashion Weeks have been showcasing designers shuttling out apparel for well-to-do nuclear families, the 15th edition of Fashion Week features budding Canadian designers that could burst international at any moment. International designers are present too, showcasing their presentations of Fall 2008 collections. ]]

[CDATA[It’s time to reach way back into the depths of your closet and bust out all the items you secretly covet but would feign to wear in public. Toronto has a contingency of conservative dressers with snobby attitudes who like to look down on anyone who takes a fashion risk. Thankfully, the producers of L'Oreal Fashion Week – that would be the Fashion Design Council of Canada - are putting up a fight against peer pressure fashion monotony with the ensuing Toronto Fashion Week tradition. Six days of good clothes, fashion faux pas and parties will go off with many a hitch and drama galore. Look out for the best dressed, the worst dressed, fashion shows in the good, the bad and the ugly categories and a condensed list of designers to offer you some background for your critiquing pleasure. Stick around. This could get interesting. ]]

The Gardiner Makes Artistic Waves

[CDATA[At its completion in 1966, the oft-maligned Gardiner Expressway stole lake views from a large section of the city (basically everyone but nouveau-condo dwellers and island residents). Since then, debates have swirled around potential aesthetic improvements to the traffic-ravaged mainline. Razing it, burying it, and reducing it have all been suggested, though no option has proved viable. Now, thanks to a City of Toronto-sponsored contest, the lake will reclaim a section of the thoroughfare, thus giving the roadway a much-needed hit of artistic improvement. ]]

[CDATA[Equal parts comedy, satire and sloppy sentiment, the latest movie from the exceedingly rich imagination of writer/director Michel Gondry (the director behind Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and The Science Of Sleep) pays homage, to a certain degree, to the dearly departed VHS tape. "Be Kind Rewind" is a quirky comedy that will nonetheless be an acquired taste for some - a tolerance for Jack Black's schtick will go a long way- and too terminally sentimental for others. ]]

[CDATA[At 80 years old, Oscar remains resilient, affectation-free, and fashionable. The world's most famous golden bald man has managed to stand strong, no matter the circumstances. During the Great Depression and the Second World War he gave joy to a beleaguered public and a ravaged celebrity class. Naked, small, and strong, Oscar has weathered strife without batting an eyelash (though, he may have alopecia). Unlike his fragile cousin, the Golden Globe, Oscar faced down the WGA strike without flinching. And now he prepares to once again go home with a bevy of strangers; it's almost Academy Awards night. With a look at who should, could, and will go home with the little man, here's your almost comprehensive (i.e. I haven't the slightest idea who will win Best Makeup) Oscar Preview. If it helps you with an office pool, I want a cut. ]]
