[CDATA[David O. Russell is one of the most interesting directors in America, responsible for such wonderful films as Flirting With Disaster and Three Kings. The man is currently putting the finishing touches on his latest movie Nailed (described as a contemporary Wizard Of Oz about a search for healthcare). Normally this would mean that it would be at least 3 years before he started a new project. However, that’s not the case this time. Russell announced today that he has signed on to direct The Grackle. ]]

[CDATA[You never really know what you're going to get with a Beck concert. The 38 year old Scientologist has recorded twelve albums over the fifteen years that he's been in the music industry, and of those it can be said that no two are alike. He's done everything from mournful acoustic ballads to postmodern sample collages while covering everything in between. His latest album, Modern Guilt, is produced by Danger Mouse and so it's heavy on the psychedelia. Some call this eclecticism, while others think it insincerity. Whatever the case, expect to hear things like "that song doesn't usually last three hours, but we got into a serious thing there". Beck's three-night stand at United Palace Theatre begins tonight.]]

[CDATA[Well, the summer has come and gone and now Labor Day weekend is upon us. You could spend the three days sitting around your apartment working yourself up into a solid state of depression and amassing a collection of empty ice cream containers and used heroin needles, or you could actually do something with your life. You live in fucking New York City, the cultural capital of North America. If you can't find anything to do here, you're just not trying. Here are a list of exciting labor day events that we humbly suggest you check out. So stop hating yourself and get outside already! It ain't winter yet, buddy. ]]

[CDATA[It's not a great time to be Tom Cruise. The former biggest star in Hollywood was recently dumped from a starring role in Columbia Pictures' spy thriller "Edwin A. Salt" in favour of Angelina Jolie. According to Page Six Cruise is currently floundering in Hollywood, having recently thrown a temper tantrum during a meeting with studio executives after they rejected the idea of filming a Mission Impossible 4. He's also seen the release of his completed $100 million drama Valkyrie delayed 3 times in the last six months. Apparently embracing scientology and denouncing psychiatry is bad for your career. Who knew? ]]

[CDATA[The name Elliot Tiber may not sound significant to you, but once you know what he's done, you'll be immediately intrigued. Tiber was one of the main developers of the original Woodstock Festival in 1969. He was also a key figure in the Stonewall Riots, an event largely recognized as starting the entire gay rights movement. Tiber's life story, Taking Woodstock has been optioned as a major motion picture by none other than Ang Lee. At this time next year, you'll know who Elliot Tiber is. Get there ahead of the bandwagon at the Miami Beach Cinematheque tonight. In addition to a documentary about his life, there will also be a meet-and greet, wine and cheese, and an afterparty at Halo. Miami socialites, can you afford not to be there?]]

Tim Burton Found His Alice

[CDATA[Tim Burton really shouldn't be a blockbuster director. The guy has one of the oddest directorial visions in Hollywood. His movies play like the childhood fantasies of a latchkey kid raised on a steady diet of cartoons, horror movies, and German Expressionism. He brought Pee-wee to the big screen, discovered Batman's dark heart decades before The Dark Knight, and introduced the world to the eccentric acting of Johnny Depp. His movies really should play to marginal audiences of social outcasts and movie geeks, yet somehow the guy is one of the most commercially successful directors of all time. His Batman was such a massive success that it allowed his sensibility to enter the mainstream. He has a generation of imitators, and despite his latter day cinematic sins, the man has to be regarded as one of the most interesting filmmakers to ever work in Hollywood. ]]

Roger Ebert Leaves Television

[CDATA[For decades movie criticism has been defined by two Chicago film lovers sitting in balcony determining the success or failure of a movie with their ever-powerful thumbs. Siskel And Ebert first hit the airwaves in 1975 when they reviewed films on PBS and by the 1980s they had become an institution. Their nationally syndicated TV show was a ratings hit and practically every movie poster printed featured a thumb rating. Gene Siskel's untimely death in 1999 put a damper on the program, but after a parade of guest hosts Roger Ebert marched on with the much more placid and agreeable Richard Roeper at his side. The show retained its popularity until recent years and now it seems as though it has sadly gone they way of the dodo and Ore-os cereal. ]]

[CDATA[After a multi-year relationship in the limelight, Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman—America's first couple of comedy—have broken up. Apparently all the fucking of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon has put a great strain on the relationship and the duo have called it quits. Kimmel will go back to slowly killing off his reputation as a edgy comedian, while Silverman will return to her ever-expanding career as the funniest and hottest damn female comic alive. Overweight beer-swigging comedians everywhere officially think they have a chance with Silverman. ]]

[CDATA[We can expect to see a lot of Sherlock Holmes movies and merchandise very soon. Why? Because the great detective has entered the public domain. It’s no longer necessary to fork over mountains of money to the Arthur Conan Doyle estate to use the character, so it is officially time for this cash cow to be milked. There are already a variety of Sherlock Holmes pictures set to shoot in Hollywood, but easily the most bizarre project has got to be a comedy rendition of the character staring Borat himself, Sacha Baron Cohan, as Sherlock Holmes (no seriously, this is real). ]]
