The 80s-heart-on-sleeve Sub Pop-ers, Oxford Collapse come to Vancouver. Hipsters and nostalgics will be thrilled with the bands moody and melodic display of pure indie rock. Everyone else will probably be confused. Fuck them.—PB

A group of unlikely music industry darlings, these former visual artists are actually tight with Bowie and have found a fan in Mos Def. Expect plenty of electro, beat boxing, and free jazz sounds as the basis to their Beat-like lyrics. No surprise that this group likes to have fun, in particular, the type of fun your grandmother would appreciate: word games! Apart from their name, their first album was titled OK Calculator.
Carlos Santana has honed a style that no one ever gets sick of. He is the anti-trend. A true classic, you could say. The man is more popular, if not more so, now than he was in his heyday over thirty years ago. His slick Spanish guitar riffs make the perfect background music to a warm summer supper party or any event at all really. Catch this legend while he can still talk and tour, which is more than I can say for Bob Dylan these days. -J.T.

If Homer had eaten the hallucinogenic pepper at an urban chili fest, rather than a rural cookout, his temporary decent into peripatetic madness would have been sound-tracked by Delerium. Vancouver ambient savant, Delerium, may not be the best speller, but his ethereal sound does encourage pepper consumption and light-headed wandering. This time they bring their Simpsons-influenced hallucinogenics to Montreal. I hope they've heard of The Simpsons there.

My friend, the archivist, is still in the honeymoon phase of his gig. Thus, he’s neither daunted nor indifferent to large archives; in fact, he’s titillated by the thought of digging in with nothing but a banker’s lamp and a number two pencil. Conversely, my friend the anarchist loathes the idea of large-scale orderliness while my friend the antichrist has other things on his mind entirely. Presumably, Grand Archives like the notion of massive stores of catalogued information. Incidentally, they also probably like driving while sleeping; maybe they’re anarchists after all. –S.T.

That epigraph was met with boos from everyone. However, when he altered his stance to "abortions for some, miniature American flags for others," the crowd responded positively. Similarly, BC punk stalwarts, Dayglo Abortions, aren't for everyone. However, if you don't go to this gig, you'll have to get a miniature American flag (your Canadian patriotism is under duress).
Zoey had disappeared into the coastal zealot commune months earlier. We had managed to spirit her away in the dark of night, thanks to a quiet van, an H&M sale of black clothing, and a keen sense of smell. Back in her parents' garage, the deprogramming was going well. Then, the secular exorcist uttered the phrase, "she has been unjustly spiritualized" and "Stop Your Crying" crept into my head; I missed my holy water cue and we had to start all over again. -S.T.

I've never been to Iceland, but, judging from their export-worthy music, I imagine everyone is laidback. How does anything ever get done? The sublime Sigur Rós play intense, ethereal, atmospheric, almost diaphanous songs that encourage blissful nodding and transfixed stares.
I find it really annoying when bands become famous for covering someone else's song. All of their other songs suck, and they redo a song and that propels them to the top. Anyone can redo a song. It's also annoying when people try really hard to become famous but don't write their own songs, have no musical ability and are coached on exactly what to wear, who to be and what to do. (Canadian Idol.) So it's refreshing when there's a band out there like Black Kids who just sort of do what they do and don't care. They didn't have a website for a long time, they didn't have a record label for awhile and they don't have a full length album. They made it strictly on their musical ability.

Even though I’m constantly confused by the fact that their accents rarely show up in their singing voices, I have to admit that I love British bands. They have a remarkable ability to play wide-ranging pop music and make it seem completely arty and pretentious. I’m not sure how they do it. Well, I know how Stereolab does it, at least. They have a lead singer who performs in French. If you want to make anything seem pretentious just add French. It’s remarkable how well that works. –P.B.

Run, my friends, while you still have intact eardrums! Even those high-tolerance residents of Los Vegas have a breaking point and they’ve unshackled Dion to save themselves. The Quebecois diva has announced a continent-wide tour months in advance, so all you die-hards can make sure her shows sell out. At this point you have to wonder if she still works for her love of the craft, because we all know she doesn’t need the money. There's nothing interesting about him. So I'll just go ahead and make some stuff up:

Neil Sedaka has the world record for most pleats per pant.

Neil Sedaka's glasses can be seen from space.

Neil Sedaka's biggest hit was the 1962 Paul Anka diss track, "Anka, how's my ass taste."

Don't get me wrong, I dig neo-Walken, but he used to actually act. Which brings us to Deer Hunter, the film that rightly scored Walken a best supporting Oscar for his portrayal of a heroin-addicted Russian Roulette player. What does that have to do with the brilliant ambient-rock Deerhunter? Nothing, though an opportunity to discuss old-school Walken should never be wasted. -S.T.

Oh Metallica, you were once the most popular hard rock band in the world. Then the heavy metal craze ended and all of your macho posturing started to look silly. Then you released the documentary Some Kind Of Monster, which made it clear that your entire band is comprised of whiny egotists with more attitude than brains. These days you still put asses in seats, but the mystique is long gone. Ah well, at least your music hasn't aged as poorly as Pearl Jam.—PB
