Yet another one of those British sweethearts that girls swoon over, Cullum seems to sacrifice original artistic integrity for mass appeal. Kind of a British Michael Buble, really. And equally as boring with his attempts at jazz. That being said, his cover of Don't Stop the Music is actually pretty good. -D.P.

For almost 20 years, folk-rockers, the Indigo Girls, are still strumming that guitar. With the music business being such a fickle business, these ladies have not let their guard down in letting pop culture or the music industry dictate their music. These ladies have stuck to their roots by keeping it real. And now they have a new album they'll be performing, Poseidon And The Bitter Bug

Every four years, the Paralympic Games outshine the other athletes in many different ways. With only ten days, the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games will cover every event from Wheelchair Curling, Ice Sledge Hockey, Cross Country-skiing, Biathlon and Alpine Skiing (both standing, sitting, and for the visually impaired). Safe to say, these games are much more interesting than the Olympic Games.

Sweden has produced yet another group of angry heavy metal rockers to charm your Guitar Hero. Hammerfall will be playing at Club Soda, but teamed up with them is a real talented bunch, the American metal band Powerglove. Their first hit single Mario Minor is a heavy metal version of the Super Mario theme song...beautifully done, by the way. Yes, both bands have the cheezy logo's that typical Metal bands have to make themselves appear "hardcore," and while I don't support it, I do support both of these bands, and you going to watch them.

Formerly a member of Toronto supergroup Broken Social Scene, Jason Collett has decided, for quite some time now, to pursue his solo career. And it's paid off. Out of all the solo BSS projects, his is definitely one of the few to really take off. His hybrid alt-country/country-indie sound has gotten him signed to the prestigious Arts & Crafts label, and has taken him around the world. While some may find his music too rustic or whiskey-ish (a good way to describe it), he has a legion of fans, and now, at the Biltmore Cabaret, it's your chance to find out if you're enlisting. -D.P.

With song titles like Pints of Guinness Make Me Strong and You Look Like I Need a Drink, you can only imagine how catchy the songs of Against Me! are. The lead singers rough and loud voice combined with catchy guitar that sounds like it’s hard, but is actually bouncy and fun, you’ve got one recipe for a great live concert. Against Me! will be teaming up with Cancer Bats and Jaguar Love… I know, the headliners are never as good as the main course, but sometimes ya can’t have it all.

One day I heard this song that the band Korn had done called Y'all want a single. They wrote it because their management told them to write a smash hit for their new album and they were like 'fuck that.' So they came up with the line 'Y'all want a single? Say fuck that!' The song is 3 minutes and 17 seconds long and they say fuck 87 times. I played it for my friend one day and later she told me "I was listening to it thinking how it really sucks, and then realized that it was supposed to suck and that was the point and then it became really cool." Now that's a Korn targeted audience… Idiots!

We have our Jack Johnsons, our Shins, and sir José González, but rarely do new bands make an appearance into the nature of slow folk music. Thankfully, there's The Low Anthem. While some of their songs are almost too slow for my taste, some of their singles such as To Ohio mix beautiful melodies with simplistic yet deep lyrics.

The fundamental problem with Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is Alice. Why do so many people like precociousness, earnestness, and naïve impropriety? Incidentally, why do so many people like floppy pop rock? Like, for example, the Mayer of aged swooning guarantees blues nods. With a few albums of adult-alternative drivel behind him, John Mayer manages to meld a strong pop sensibility to his burgeoning blues, bringing the smoky sounds of Stevie Ray to the people. With the new Mayer come rumors of his affection for the blues, with extended shredding sessions in concert. His ability to use seventh chords and win Grammys is never at issue; it is his derivative, super-sensitive balladry that had audiophiles plugging their ears. For more of the new Mayer, he graces the stage at Beacon Theatre, Thursday, April 1, 2010 at 7:00 PM

The thing about Blink 182 that made them so popular was that they didn't care about a thing. They made music that was fun, easy to relate to, and they never took themselves seriously. Tom DeLonge however, seems to have catapulted himself in the opposite direction with his band Angels and Airwaves. For some reason, the lead singer has all of a sudden changed from being a young man complaining about being awkward on first dates to some random guy that's essentially calling himself the greatest to have happened to rock music. The band's concepts are skewed and far too majestic for their abilities. Honestly, DeLonge should just go back to running around naked...at least he seemed nice then. -D.P.

And look what that did to her (but more importantly, us). Now, however, things seem to be a bit more on track. BEP is a full unit, with men intact...but still, one can't help but feel that's it's just Will.i.am and Fergie, and the other two (three?) are just there for the sake of keeping the band name.
Pitchfork sweethearts, Passion Pit are more than just hype; they're actually worth something musically. Sure, they may not be revolutionary, but hell, doesn't mean they're not damn good. And the live shows show that there are actual humans behind those blips and beating beats. And what's more, they don't come off as those self-indulgent idiots MGMT, but rather as self-aware, kind, and excited at the fact that they're playing to people. Every live rendition is success and every audience member can walk home, will want to walk home and wish that Passion Pit's music and joy soundtracked their entire lives. Well she does. And it’s a far better reputation than either you or I could ever hope for. Her last album alone, IRM stands as a testament to her talent, and when compounded with the rest of her catalogue, it’s obvious that the young French singer is a titanesque monument to pop music as a whole. No matter what the price, you must go see her. -D.P

Not too say that they're not original, because this band has a pretty cool sound. It's just that through their own music I get a sense of what cool playlists these guys must have on their ipods!! Oh Artie, well you got your wish and so did tons of folk who came of age in the sixties. (Get it?! Cause they're a folk group!!) But this isn't to say that a show with a catalog of songs this stunning can't be enjoyed by all. There's no question that when Art Garfunkel backs up the mastermind songwriting genius of Paul Simon there will be a setlist that overshadows even their greatest hits album. On the other hand, if your first name is something like Bloody Stump or Reeking Carcass, you need a normal last name or else you sound like a breakfast cereal mascot. Similarly, if you're a titled aristocrat (i.e. a Duke, Count, Prince, etc.) you need a regal last name; you can't play against type without seeming contrived. I'm not saying they're the manufactured type, I'm saying...well...they sound cheap. There's two ways you can go if you're an "indie" band; the first is the way of dirty New York (a la Sonic Youth), the other is of the glamorous, shiny New York (see The Strokes). Both spectrum have their highs and lows, yes, but Plants and Animals don't even figure there. They don't even apply to Toronto's Arts & Crafts VS. Wrongbar spectrum. I was younger then and, I like to think, a better person too; more understanding, more gentle, more caring. We had started dating in the springtime, and all the way into the summer. Even when she left for a month on a family trip, we stayed together, and were both faithful. After that, our relationship sailed forth unhindered until the following spring. One year. It had been one year and I was a year older while she was a year prettier, and everything had taken on a golden glow. There was talk about taking it to the next level. We were young, yes, but then, I believed that emotion had no concept of age. I remember that night I proposed to her, that splendid night; it was as if something from a movie. I remember the fights with our respective families, but they too could see how we felt, and for once, decided that we knew best and supported us all along the way. Now, fast forward into the planning of our wedding. We were sitting on the carpet of her parents' living room, going through the songs the DJ ought to play. We were entitled at least a few personal choices, weren't we? Natalie suggested something by Our Lady Peace.

Anosh Irani's play, My Granny the Goldfish is what you could call a sweet family love story set in a hospital. A young Indian student is put in the hospital and based on the synopsis I read, his Grandmother visits him from India with a bottle of whiskey. The synopsis also had the word morphine in it. This has potential to be awesome!! -WB

Before Flava Flav became a ubiquitous reality television comic semi-hero, he was part of one the most revered and iconic rap crews in history. "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold us Back" spawned millions of imitators, inspired hundreds of thousands of neoteric MCs, transformed pop-culture, spotlighted American political strife, and brought hip hop into the mainstream. However, it doesn't make Flav, or anyone in this 'band', appealing in any way, shape, or form. -S.T.

Is Faber Drive the street name where the stereotype of bad wanna-be punk bands all live? If so we must quarantine this area and remove it from the face of the earth. I really hope these guys are joking. On May 29th I'm sure theVogue Theatre will be alive with girls throwing panties and bras and themselves at these boys. So good for them but those girls are liars because no amount of alcohol could help someone legitimately enjoy this band. You can't mix whiskey with flat pop.-WB

Someone once sent me a link to an audio recording of two Nickelback songs played simultaneously in two different speakers. The conclusion: they’re the same song! Nickelback has made a career out of writing and recording the same song over and over, but obviously people like that song, otherwise you’d say “Nickel who?” It's only fitting, then, that these West-coast rockers will take on the GM Place for a crowd full of adoring and loyal perma-song fans. Expect mullets, skinny jeans, and a whole lot of one song.

I normally associate folk duos with the kinds of characters you'll find in the film A Mighty Wind- not with Swedes. Which makes this all the more interesting. Perhaps they'll have an indiosyncratic approach borne of a unique background - at least in the world of folk music. Either way,

First Aid Kit's performance at Vancouver's Media Club might be just like medicine (pun alert).

What's Iron Maiden? I hear they're these British guys that make a lot of noise with their guitars. I've seen pictures, they have long hair and dress horribly. Scream a lot too.
"Crazy Love", the new album from Vancouver's Michael Bublé is, according to the man himself, an introspective album, one filled with autobiographical pieces about the highs and lows of relationships and a departure from previous work. And he claims the listener can hear the difference himself...in the recording process. It mustn't be forgotten that Bublé doesn't actually write his songs; they're vestiges from times past which appropriates as his own. While obviously Bublé's idols did a similar thing, they did so without this artist's shameful attempt at playing the tortured, introspective artist who slices open his heart to his audience. And while Sinatra appeared too at Madison Square Garden, it was obvious he was a performer, and not some cheap kid pretending to be just like the people paying hundreds of dollars to see him. -D.P.

Can you handle even more Lady Gaga? Well, LaGa’s The Monster Ball is hitting town with Kid Cudi (who did an awesome remix called Poke Her Face) replacing Kanye as Gaga's tour partner. Her The Fame Monster hits on everything she didn’t write on The Fame, exploring “the evolution of humanity and how we begin as one thing, and we become another.” Deep. But a lot is riding on this release, with songs that address life after achieving the celebrity she so relentlessly chased, but a close listen suggest that she’s struggling to find fresh ideas. Nonetheless, Lady Gaga is on a fast track to world domination anyway. She named her first album The Fame long before she had any, selling over 4.5 million copies worldwide, which makes her eight-song follow-up all that more intriguing.
