I have a friend named Azy. It's not even her real name. It's short for Azarin. But every time I would mention her people thought it was so cool that she was named after Ozzy Osbourne. I'd say no, it's a short form and it's not even spelled the same. People could just not fathom that there could be another form of Ozzy. There is even an orangutan named Azy who is part of a language program in Iowa.

When you hear the word folk and festival together, you might think of some ukulele-playing, head-scarf-wearing, potato-sack-skirt tree-huggers. Folk actually isn't as specific (or corny) as you might think, and includes so many styles of music including blues, Celtic, traditional music, roots, global grooves, cutting-edge sounds, dub, bluegrass, funk, country, hip-hop, R& B, old-timey, spoken word (just to name a few).

The fest will not only showcase unknowns, but rather over 65 performances that include many mainstream artists from around the world. Some famous faces include Sam Roberts, Bedouin Soundclash and Aimee Mann.

So come spread your blankets, bring your kids (they get in for free), go shopping for hand-crafted items at the craft market, eat food from around the world that's sold at the concessionaires, and just enjoy the music. –M.K.

Nine Inch Nails don't come around that often, and they are getting up there in age so although this show will be expensive, start saving up now to get a ticket. The other day I had an argument with someone who thought that Johnny Cash wrote the song Hurt. I said that he'd redone it and Nine Inch Nails had written it first. They said Johnny Cash would never redo Nine Inch Nails. Then when we looked it up and he realized that I was right he said "Well Johnny Cash actually understands what the song is about, he'd been through a lot in his life, so he knows what he's talking about when he sings it." I was like "But Trent wrote the song, I think he has some idea." But even Trent said that he likes Johnny's version better than his.

Several years ago, I tutored a kid; let's call him Tim. For the third time, he was trying to pass the 9th grade. It wasn't going well. Before the summer school final exam he broke a study appointment. 'Tim, what's wrong with you? This is important,' I scolded. He responded, 'yeah, I know, but I have Warped Tour tickets.'

In the intervening years, Tim eventually found his way onto a set of decks. His DJ career is going well. I ran into him a few weeks ago. He looked like a Klaxon. 'Got Warped tickets?' I queried. 'Man, I'm not 15 anymore.'

Believe it or not at one point in time Motley Cru was actually cool. It was back in the 80's when they all had big hair and could really rock out. Things have sort of changed since then. For example in 2005 Vince Neil was on the Surreal Life and was married by his Surreal Life housemate and ordained Minster MC Hammer. And remember when Tommy Lee married Pamela Anderson in 1995 after knowing her for 96 hours? Motley Cru is now pretty much a big joke.
Lagwagon is exactly the type of band that you would expect to come out of a California suburb. The band members were influenced by punk and ska, but a middle class upbringing and lack of interest in anything other than music and partying turned those musical styles into pop. Granted, the sound is too aggressive to appeal to a mainstream audience, but it’s still nothing groundbreaking or artistically challenging. It’s merely fun mindless tunes. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s just something too keep in mind before you develop unrealistic expectations. -P.B.

Anglophiles rejoice: Oasis finally returns. Do you remember when (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? broke and everyone was walking slowly down halls and blowing off Sallys? That was great. Noel, Liam, and those two other guys – neither of whom are named Bonehead – bring their anthemic Brit-pop to the Saddledome. Say what you will about massive career declines, but you’ll get shivers as soon as “Wonderwall’s” acoustic strums begin. Sounds good to me. Neither of these bands is at all traditional despite their genre. Woodpigeon include up to 14 members whistling, clapping hands, harmonica-ing to create a truly collaborative sound. With Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir, it's more about slide guitar and banjo, but y'know, more edgy. Us Canadians don't do anything in a straightforward way. - R.T.

I used to take guitar lessons when I was in high-school and I was never very good. Our teacher put a bunch of us in a band and entered us in some guitar competitions in the U.S. Although it was a lot of fun, it was also really embarrassing because I sucked so much. For some reason or another my teacher decided to put me in this other band with some really really good people and wanted us to play Europa from the album The Best of Santana in the next competition. Not only that, we had to memorize it and couldn't have any music in front of us. That's when I really appreciated Santana because that was the hardest thing to play ever. Did I mention I had to do the chords and the solos for two different classes at the competition? -A.C.

I have a friend who had tickets to a Flogging Molly show, but got way too drunk, never got in, and woke up the next day with mysterious cuts and bruises all over him. If he had seen these Celtic punkers, the result would probably have been the same. - R.T.

Tickets are $30.00 @ Ticketmaster or 403-777-0000
