Una Mas

omplete list

ith little else besides an immense sound system and dance floor, Una Mas was designed to be a temple of music. It wants to be both underground and trendy - a difficult feat. Friday night draws suburban ex-ravers who have graduated to disco shirts and club-babe outfits. The music can be excellent, but the hype-driven spinners yield uneven results. Yet Una Mas has hosted everything from drum 'n' bass to loungecore. Sunday DJs Dino and Terry do the House and Garage music for an ultra-cool night. This could be the 2nd best night here (after Saturdays). It’s music not to be missed.

The Vibe

Una Mas is for real dancers. It's not a club for profilers and models -- people who stand around trying to look cute. There are no velvet ropes, no pretense! People are there to dance and have a good time. If you want to drink and stand around looking cute, better off at Tonic and This is London. If you want to dance and meet people who are not uptight, then be here to check out the sounds and dance ’til 4:30 a.m. It's strictly a dance party. All others can warm the sofa at home.

On Saturdays, Una Mas attempts to restore the magic of the old Dance Cave, but while the original factory sound was hard, brutal and funky, Una Mas’ music now is largely fluffy HiNRG. The following has mutated from working-class, streetwise black and T.O. kids to straight suburbanites and bourgeois white muscle clones more concerned with pecs and sex than dancing. Still, it's worth checking out who's there on Fridays, and if you go on Saturday (suggested arrival time: 2 am), you will feel as if you had a big night out.

Leather banquettes, hardwood floors and huge lofty windows. Capacity 500. Thu: Uproc: Funk, soul, rare groove w/ John Kumahara, Mike K, DJ Serious, Kola, host Tarik. Fri: Special events inc. Elevation, People in the Back, Moody, more. Sat: Shifting Gears: Nu jazz, deep house w/ residents Jason Palma, Dee Jay Nav of Movement.

house heads mingling away with breakers

Una Mas is definitely a hidden gem. The exterior is low key, reminds me of the old days when warehouse parties were held in un-marked buildings. Once you're inside the club, the minimalist design and clean lines lends a touch of class, yet, this is a place stripped of pretense. The first floor has a relaxed, laid back quality to it. Lots of wood, local artists' works showcased on the walls, and a spectacular bar running along the length of the room.
People are there to have fun. You've got the house heads mingling away with breakers, indies with suburbanites. The biggest testament to the clout with insiders was when David Lee gave his acceptance at the oscars for Chicago. He thanked his loved ones, his crew and gave a shout out to Una Mas in front of the world. Now, that was a real coup.

Dance. Dance. Dance.
... Oh, and when you leave they give you a free bottle of water at the door.

I guess my expectations were low, but the place really doesn't look THAT bad. I found the decor rather charming and a nice change from the glitz at so many other places. Anyway, the music and crowd were by far the best i've seen in any Toronto club lately, and I really had a wonderful time. (I went on a Saturday)
