Sugar Club

Complete list

Sugar adds character to the street while at the same time automatically reducing the machismo factor of all who enter its laminated portals.

The Locale
A mixed crowd with low-level attitude comes together at Sugar (on certain nights)to sip cocktails and shake it fast. When this funky technophile club was first introduced to the area, it gained momentum fast. And it seems to have kept the regulars coming back. Tucked in Clubland’s hip hop underworld, in the home of the old Swingers and Loft 57, above Pearl Nightclub, Sugar is a mid-sized, but serious contender. But although Sugar is a lot about dance, it also harks back to basics of good old human personality. One good dose of sugar-induced fun. But be warned, the music is mostly a house and dance mix.

The Kicks
The bold-faced names and the beautiful people crowd this space reborn once again as a happening club, at least on certain nights. Thursdays are pure dance pleasure - appearing to be the best night here - drawing a beautiful but jaded downtown crowd, heavy on fashion types. The music is a blend of underground and instrumental house, Depending on the night, you may not get in unless you're dressed up or are looking particularly stylish.

Sweet offers Industry nights Wednesdays are hosted by William and Antonio for wildly mixed crowd (gay and straight). Friday is Disco night. New weekly Style finds DJ Dave Campbell blending house, R&B and old school at Sugar, Cover is $10.

Sugar Nightclub is decent in locale and definitely has a great design concept. However, the bartenders, the owners and the doormen need just a little more fine tuning in the art of hospitality. My one, and last, visit to sugar consisted of a drunk, pompus bartender who decided to ignore me and serve everyone around me, then charge me 12 dollars for a 1 ounce drink. Fortunately, the girl's drunken state resulted in her giving me more than enough change (Long story). Instead of being honest, I decided to take it. Afterall, the bitch charged me double for a single drink! Seeing the girl as intoxicated as she was, pouring drinks, looking like a tramp and consistantly laughing like some ditzy bimbo made me realize that eventhough Sugar may have the look down, their staff needs to learn a little or alot of class. I give Sugar a rating of 2. On the basis that their bartenders sucks and that Steven, the owner, needs a little more work on the personality. He's better off working for the Mafia.

As a single female in Toronto, it is difficult to find a place I can go to alone and not feel like every creep is trying to pick me up. Then I found this place, Sugar. While the flirtations are still there, there are few creeps. I have been here only a few times, but I have met several regulars (I am surprised that bars still do have regulars), and most of them, as well as the bartenders, have made me feel at home. What is so odd, (though it is nice) is that most of the clientele here, (generally male) is smart, funny and personable, and only a few people are genuinely jerks or creeps. The best thing is that I have had great conversations here with people who weren't just trying to get me into bed.
