| tep on down into this subterranean café of carpeted floors, requisite red, leatherette chairs and Riverdale underdogs: blue collar types in lovingly tailored overalls at the long wooden bar; girls in bad-girl boots swaying this way and that. A been-there-forever kind of space that feels as though it was once some sort of Middle Eastern coke den that was accidentally discovered during renovation of the ground-floor storefront space The few afternoon visits weve appeared here, we had the place to ourselves (Okay, so now you all know who are the underdogs). It is rather cozy down there in those fat, burgundy chairs, heavy wooden tables and hideous wallpaper. A place one could easily kill an afternoon, or the early part of the evening. The shaded patio (seats 35) is perfect for enjoying summer days and nights, while the relaxed dining room (seats 60) is just right for those cooler days. Live jazz Friday & Saturday night and ever-changing art also make this a fun late-night spot. It seems to be the staff that makes this little den so likable. Our servers have been very amicable on each visit. One waitress even bought us a rose from one of those roving flower people. How cool is that? The fare includes a variety of appetizers, pastas, sandwiches, salads and entrees. The menu is what youd expect in a pub-type atmosphere; burgers, Shepherds Pie, Angers and Hash and the like. Basically your typical comfort food. English-style pub features traditional British fare plus some Canadian and New Zealand dishes. There is nothing inspired or innovative about the menu here. But the dishes are reasonable priced, and as long as you know what youre going there for - comfortable surroundings, and fairly good British fare - you cant go wrong. Good sports ... lots of fun... again, great Staff! Flippant Chuck Prewitt, TO. ON Nov. 12, 2001 In response to Great Neighborhood Fun . Where the ell are you going. I have been here through three very long evenings. Horribly slow service with flippant waiters and rude bartenders. Although the food was good, i would not return. |
