Movie Preview: Wall-E

here was a time when each Hollywood studio had its own distinct feel. They each had their own actors, writers, and directors on staff and there was a mandate set by the studio head that determined what type of films the company made. Those days are long over. Now films made in Hollywood could come from any studio. They are virtually indistinguishable from each other. Well, all except for one anyways. Apple computers’ Pixar Studios take pride in producing films that are unique on the Hollywood scene. Sure, other companies put out CGI animated movies, but none are able to equal the level of technical craftsmanship and traditional storytelling that Pixar produces year after year. This weekend the company is releasing its latest creation in theaters. The movie is called Wall-E and it is poised to be one of the finest films that Pixar has ever produced.
One of the traditions that Pixar has been fostering since the beginning of its existence is the company’s braintrust. Founder John Lasseter assembled a team of talented writers and directors early on and they all regularly meet to discuss future projects and develop screenplays. This is not a group of producers who asses the commercial prospect of future projects to protect their investments, but a team of talented artists trying to ensure that the movies they produce are as intelligent, funny, and satisfying as possible. Over the years various people have been added to this group (such as the extraordinarily talented Brad Bird) but two figures have remained constant leaders: writer/directors John Lasseter (the Toy Story movies, Cars) and Andrew Stanton( A Bug’s Life, Finding Nemo).
