ritics and audiences were shocked when Sylvester Stallone’s
Rocky Balboa was released in 2006 and actually worked. It had been 16 years since Rocky had last graced the silver screen and over 20 years since he had been a realistic character. It was inevitable that the movie would re-launch Stallone’s career. What’s surprising is the way that it also set a trend of reviving dead movie franchises from the 1980s.
In the wake of
Rocky Balboa’s surprising success, Stallone has revived his long dormant
Rambo franchise, Bruce Willis resurrected
Die Hard, and George Lucas and Steven Spielberg ruined the memories of film fans worldwide by cranking out an unnecessary
Indiana Jones sequel. Today new has broken that another 80s franchise is poised for a comeback. This time it’s an Eddie Murphy vehicle about a Detroit cop who ends up hilariously out of place in Beverly Hills.
That’s right, Axel Foley is coming back. The wise-cracking cop with an affinity for odd impressions and jamming bananas in tailpipes will return in
Beverly Hills Cop 4. Apparently the reclusive Spice Girl impregnating comedian recently approached Paramount with a pitch regarding the long gestating series and the studio executives immediately wet their pants with excitement and cut Murphy a ludicrous check. No information has been released regarding the plot yet, but it’s safe to assume that it will involve Murphy being dragged out of Detroit to solve a crime in Beverly Hills that affects him on a personal level. A great deal of swearing, charming culture clashes, and a supporting role for Jude Reinhold will follow.
