David Lynch Teams Up With Herzog and Jodorowsky

The Cannes Film Festival is always the source of countless surprising announcements every year. Production companies and talent from across the globe converge on picturesque French beaches and greenlight new projects on a daily basis. Mere days into the festival there have already been a number of exciting projects announced, but none more bizarre than two titles that were discussed simultaneously yesterday. Director David Lynch (the world’s leading creator of fucked-up dreamscape movies like Mulholland Drive) revealed the two latest projects to be released by his appropriately titled production company Absurda. While it’s always a joyous occasion to learn that Lynch has a new project in development, these titles seem particularly exciting because they will see Lynch collaborating with two other legendarily odd filmmakers: Werner Herzog and in Alejandro Jodorowsky.

For anyone unfamiliar with Werner Herzog, he is the German director responsible for such world cinema classics as Aguirre: Wrath Of God, Fitzcarraldo, and Stroszek. He has made a movie exclusively with midget actors, hypnotized the entire cast of a project, directed an actor at gunpoint, and ended a serious drama with the image of a dancing chicken. In other words, he’s practically a character out of a David Lynch movie and a perfect collaborator for the surreal master. Herzog is also an incredibly busy director, having helmed over 50 projects since he began his career in the 1960s. Earlier this week, Herzog announced that he would be remaking Abel Ferrara’s Bad Lieutenant this summer and with another project already lined up for the fall, he would have to abandon his latest screenplay…but that’s where Lynch comes in.
