    The Charlatan

Though some restaurants can posture good food on the basis of the décor (big budget resto = big budget kitchen right?), this restaurant comes right out an calls itself an imposter – literally.

Adhering to the “fake it ‘till you make it” mantra, this restaurant eliminated Sash’s former panache in exchange for a low key Commercial haunt with a decent patio for people watching. Expect a rather contemporary pub fare menu with a rather spectacular serving of Sweet Potato (yam) fries. –E.J.

This is upscale pub food. A bit loud and seating a bit cramped but the atmosphere is good, service attentive and quality of food very good. The hit for us was the actually quality of cuts of meat, fish, etc. One of us had a hand formed hamburger that was excellent. The fries also seem to be hand-cut with really lovely flavour and not too greasy. I wanted them cooked a bit more, but one of my dinner companion argued that they were perfect. Among the best fries in the city we would hazard. The salmon burger was not some pressed mess of fish, but a nice, if a tad bland piece of fish accompanied by a good but not great aioli. The kitchen could go a bit heavier on the spice. The last dish was a very nice pasta dish with a lovely combination of flavours and fresh, fresh ingrediants. We are, in fact, going back tonight.

See our review below. Alas, the executive chef has changed twice since we wrote it and all that we liked has gone down hill. Lovely hand made veggie burger replaced with cardboard mass produced burger on mushy bun. The menu is trying to hard now with thai bowls and other non pub like things that stretches the kitchen too far. The burgers are tasteless; even the salmon that we liked so much has even less taste. Salad was still good. Service staff excellent, but lack of attention to detail in the kitchen (forgot the aioli for the salmon). Why are they going through chefs like tissue paper, owner problem or??? It's too bad as we loved going here but likely will not be back very often if at all

The Charlatan definitely lives up to its name meaning trickster. It looks nice, but the service is slow, rude, and inattentive. The food leaves something to be desired, and its definitely not living up to its price. There are a thousand other restaurants i would rather dine out to. I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone, the attitude of the staff completely ruined my experience.
