    Tredici 13

Triskaidekaphobia, otherwise known as a fear of the number thirteen, is a rampant superstition that many people adhere to without ever questioning its origin. After some light research, I discovered that the main rumour surrounding the phobia that has hotel floors missing worldwide is the fault of Judas Iscariot. The unfaithful and conniving disciple of Jesus was the 13th to sit at the table of the last supper, thus condemning the number thirteen to bad luck for eternity. It is natural to think it odd then that a Mile-end bar/restaurant/store would subject itself to an omen of bad luck by naming itself after the doomed number. Superstitions aside, little Tredici 13 seems to be soldiering along.

There is another side: The number is apparently an omen of good luck in Italy, so, assuming Tredici 13 was banking on this, the place could be looking to capitalize on the number’s good vibe. I would venture to suggest that Italy’s mastery of food, eating and entertaining recognizes itself in the setting of the last supper, and the value of family means that all are included, even those that have done wrong. Needless to say, diners at Tredici 13 are welcome to get stuffed off their hearty traditional Italian cuisine.
