    Montreal Restaurants & Dining

    Vella

Chef John Vella promises food "just like Mom’s cooking" at his just-opened Vella restaurant on St Laurent. In the space that was previously Alto Palato, Chef Vella has launched his self-titled eatery.
The design of the space has remained largely the same, but the main attraction, culinarily speaking, is chef Vella's refined Mediterranean fare, or "Mom’s cooking," as he puts it, including dishes with Spanish, Portuguese and Italian infuences. Now adjusted in his own square footage, Vella will pump out his signature European soul food Monday to Saturday 6:00pm. – 11::00pm

Excellent food and service, staff very friendly. I will definitely dine at Vella's on my next trip to Montreal.

I was pretty disappointed...we were 4 people, and all four of us were not satisfied with our meals. The portions are small, and definitely not complete. Food wasn't too tasty, whether it was because it was missing salt, food was too dry, or food was too spicy...no one was happy with their meal. The only plate you could look forward to, is the desert. We only tried one of their dishes, the fried dough balls with chocolate syrop on top, so i really can't say all their deserts are good.

Overall rating : 2.5 stars or so..meaning average.

The staff was courteous, attentive, and discrete. The decor and ambiance were good as well.
The food : average in the sense that I found no dish or appetizer that truly stood out in our selections. The food was essentially good but not so good that I would return to try any other selections in future.

    Appetizers selected :
    1. Salt cod fritters which were average, somewhat bland, but ok nonetheless.
    2. Shrimp and chorizo which on the other hand were excellent.

    Mains :
A bit of a mixed bag as concerns the mains...
    1. Porcini tagliattelle which was good but did not stand out versus similar dishes I have had previously in such restaurants as primmi piate, cafe international or casa napoli.
    2. A Tilapia rapini dish which was cooked just right with an accompannying bed of rappini that were just just as good.

    Dessert:
The dessert selection was minimal that night.
    1. Portuguese cutard cakes
    2. Fried & sugared dough balls covered with a dark chocolate sauce.
    3. Tiramisu.

We tried the custard cakes and the dough balls covered with dark chocolate sauce. The dough balls were good but the custard cakes were somewhat chewy and average.

Nice location, nice decor.A little hard to find parking, but where isn't it.Service was fast and proffesional. Food was fresh and very good. I had a tomato, tuma entree, pork and clams main, and a tiramisu dessert. All were very good, and generous portions. I highly recomend the restaurant and hear that soon there will be 5 a 7's and open for lunch too.
