It's just before midnight, and the locals are filing into Strange Love, the latest spot in the College Street hood. The party is just beginning to lift off, and bartenders are preparing to fuel the influx. There are plenty of lounges in this area, with a more sophisticated atmosphere for the mature clubgoer - you know, the sophisticated clubgoer. However, there are some things that I think need a little massaging. And one of them just happens to be the nightlife.
Which brings us to Strange Love. Taking over the space that was once Jennifer Cardella's Chinadoll (and Stephen Salari's Butt'r before that), this racy den has been dusted off with a mild redecoration. Did we really need another College Street bar? Maybe not, but we applaud the owners for finally plugging the vacated – but still attractive - spot.

1I went to StrangeLove accidentally, thinking that China Doll was still there. I also accidentally went on the opening night, which probably accounted for a lot of the great value I experienced.
The bouncers were extremely friendly (however, keep in mind that we were two pretty girls in high heels and tight dresses, and they were jonesing to get femmes inside) and there was no cover. We also got drink tickets and were able to drink free for the night, which was really quite a nice surprise.
The plasma screens were playing The Who's "Tommy" which was an interesting choice, and the music was a good set of rock - however, this seemed to contrast with the decor, which was a kind of soft, deep, cushy black theme. The crowd was mixed - younger and older, with enough good looking people. For a small place, it had two bars, which was also appreciated. Not enough room to dance if you wanted to, but enough for a little shuffle. Food was available but we didn't order - the menu looked interesting (crab cakes, etc) for a bar that was playing rock music...
Would have to go back and see if it was consistent on another night. It will also be interesting to see how long this place lasts on trendy College St. posted by Anna 58 days ago | |
