    Bar 244

IIt seems to be one of those mysteries of life when restaurant owners decide to give their new place a seemingly irrelevant numerical title. Think Café 688 in Toronto, or Eight in Calgary. How is the common patron supposed to know that C5 at the ROM is so titled because it is located in the top of the fifth crystal? One wouldn't normally stand outside of the Michael Lee-Chin composition counting the apexes and prismatic structures for clarity before they go in to wine and dine. However, a destination with a utilitarian name is concise and to the point, à la Bar 244. (This also means there is little chance of forgetting the address).

The space at 244 Adelaide St. West has been home to numerous dives. But since Chris White took over in December, it has gradually transformed into a polished, modern space. The former owner of the White Bros. Fish Co. (a fish and chip place in the Beaches, sold in 2006), was eager to get back into the food and bar scene with something bigger. In an interesting move from battering halibut in the East end of the city, White has established a bar in the core of the Toronto nightlife district.

My husband and I ate there for the 1st time on Friday, May 16, 2008 and will never go back.

Upon arrival, the maitre d' looked at us with a blank stare and we felt immediately uncomfortable. We eat at restaurants in the old port daily and we have never had such a cold reception. The overall service was long and pitiful. We had to remind the waitress to bring us pepper and parmesan half way through our entrees and main course as it seemed to be difficult for her to remember on her own.

I ordered a tomato salad to start, and was served a cucumber salad with 2 small tomatoes instead. Ok, I kept an open mind all the same. As a main course, I initially ordered a steak medium / well done, but I was told that under no circumstances would they serve me it that way. So much for customer service. After a slight argument, both of us ordered the gnocchi, which arrived over cooked and in what seemed to be a liquidy tomatoe soup. We complained to both the waitress and the maitre d after we paid, and we were escorted out of the restaurant and were told not to come back. No problem there I said! I didn't intend to ever return.

Overall,I would never suggest this place to anyone, and would have to say it was one of the worst meals I ever had in a restaurant.
