Vancouver's newest restaurant/lounge is aiming for something a little different. Regional Tasting Lounge is exactly what the name sounds like (something that is always appreciated when the hungry customer is confronted with as many restaurants as Vancouver has.) The menu is divvied up into three geographical sections. The only consistent section on the menu will be the BC, even though the items themselves will change; otherwise, it is up to the chef's discretion as to what kind of cuisine the restaurant will be serving up any given season. (R.tl will be overhauling the menu every three months.)

The great thing about this is that it will likely keep the chef interested in his own work, and keep foodies curious and thinking about r.tl every three months. Of course the major disadvantage is that r.tl will lose out on the craving-niche. Inevitably there are nights where you just want pad thai, and if that's your bag, then you're not going to want to head to r.tl unless you're sure what cuisine they are working with that month.

The first three regions on the menu are Middle Eastern, Spanish, and the afore-mentioned constant, Coastal BC. My first instinct is to get annoyed that they just reduced several countries to something as lame as "Middle Eastern," but these guys know what they're doing: within each category, each dish is specifically categorized. (Aristotle would be proud.) Iran, Lebanon, and Morocco are the countries represented under Middle Eastern; dishes include braised lamb cheeks rubbed with Ras El Hanout served on apricot and fig couscous, with toasted caraway seed studded raita (Morocco); Fesenjun Deconstruction, sliced organic chicken thigh with toasted walnut puree, pomegranate, pressed yogurt, and fresh sabzi (Iran); Al-Quidra Bi Lawz, slow cooked beef and almond stew with fresh cilantro and spices with Sangak crips (Lebanon); and wild sea tiger prawns with chermoula glaze, cucumber, mint and rosewater salada (Morocco).

The Spanish fare includes berenjena con queso, pan fried layers of eggplant and Manchego cheese (Rioja); saffron mussel sabayon, fresh locally harvested mussels cooked in white wine, spicy Oyama chorizo, coated with a saffron sabayon (Catalonia); paella cakes, saffron risotto with chicken, prawn, pork belly, chorizo and peas bound together and pan fried (Valencia); chickpeas and Andalusian sausage, sliced garlic, Spanish onion, parsley, Corinth raisins, and toasted pine nuts (Andalusia); and a Spanish meatball trio, with lamb, Berkshire pork, and veal served in a rustic cinnamon scented tomato sauce.

The Coastal British Columbian Fare includes chia seed crusted weathervane scallops with roasted carrot puree, quince confit, and pickled torpedo onions; Berkshire pork belly with hibiscus braised purple cabbage, Cipollini onions, and Braeburn apple compote; oak barrel smoked breast of Magret duck, smoked in house, served on red grapes, celeriac asian pears and candied walnuts salad; drunken fig crustini with port-soaked black figs on fresh baked baguette, Okanagan "happy day" goat's cheese with fireweek honey aged balsamic; and sweet and spicy local root vegetables with honey glaze and seven spices.

Visited on Sunday for taste of yaletown that's running until the end of this month, and the room was full, one of the best meals we have had for the value, so it's a great time to check them out if you have never been, they will go back to their regular menu (bc, basque and morocco) in November, the dishes on the current menu are from the same menu as well. Try the Bavette if you like steak, it is quite a tasty number.

Have you had the Entrecote with the special butter from the French fare yet? Seriously, this is one to die for.

Great overall. Beautiful space, warm tones feel like your home just got a high tech upgrade! For those into checking out cool washrooms in restaurants, this should be on your list. Prices vary from $9 to $13 per dish, pretty good for the portions. Cocktails are around $10 to $12, but they are definitely well made. Great wines by the glass, about 30-40 of them including flights, from $8 to $30.

An outstanding food experience. I highly recommend the tasting menu, because not only do you want to taste as many things as possible, but the chefs do such a wonderful job of choosing courses that compliment each other that its the only way to go.

Next time you're walking to Goldfish for another repeat experience, diverge and pop into r.tl, this is the place to end up at if you're just lost in Yaletown. Unbelievable cocktails, even one with mascarpone cheese in it... its amazing!

It's really happening on the weekends so try it but if you're into a more slow and relaxing dinner I suggest you go on a Tuesday or Monday and reserve if you don't wanna wait.

Cool room, and an even cooler bookshelf .

    This place is Sick...

It deserves every bit of its 4 star rating - and you should go as you will not regret it.

I think I made some inadvertent sex noises while enjoying the French Onion Soup. Keep that on the DL though.

Gorgeous! I was brought here on weekday night for dinner... and could hardly recognize the room.

This place is so good I really can't add much that hasn't already been touched on.

I have had nothing but great experiences at r.tl. Wonderful food, exceptional - and I mean exceptional - service, and a terrific space + atmosphere. Highly recommended.

For business dinners, it's the cat's ass. But for a romantic dinner, something is missing with r.tl. The overall space is a little rigid and old-fashioned. The food was great but not entirely memorable.

Perfect! We ate here as part of my Vancouver birthday trip (we're from Seattle) and it was the best meal and service I've ever had. You must do the menu with the wine pairings. pricey but well worth it.

It's hard to get in here and you may wait a while for your food once you do - but they have a really good menu for dinner and drinks. Just try to go on a weekday.

Overall, r.tl is pretty good. It's quiet, which is nice and sometimes hard to find. Most of the dishes were executed well, except two. Service is what I expect from a restaurant of this stature, excellent. I love the atmosphere here, too bad for the two hiccups in their menu. If you're just in it for the food and don't mind noise, try r.tl.

Excellent food, the best service around, and a memory more than a meal. I would give four stars but sometimes the food feels like an afterthought... and wow is it expensive. However, you will never have a better dining experience... in this Vancouver area, anyway.
