You’d be excused for thinking that Mojo, a fruity new alternative vodka beverage, belongs in the same category as Rev – the sweet and syrupy blue drink favored by pre-club party-goers. My first instinct was that one sip of Mojo would instantly transport me back to my high school days when a Saturday night at Toronto’s Phoenix nightclub wasn’t complete without several rounds of Rev on the dance floor (cigarette in hand, this was when you could still smoke indoors).

Aesthetically, Mojo is from the same family as Rev – pretty drinks that come in cute, resealable bottles. Mojo, however, is a much more mature take on the vodka beverage. Although its three varieties are given cliche names that beg (unsuccessfully) to be taken seriously (Liquid, Vibe and Rhythm), their light taste and subtle sweetness are what save them in the end.

Liquid is actually a blend of peach, pineapple and tangerine. Vibe gets its flavor from the Star Fruit while Rhythm is made from Dragon Fruit. The drinks also boast a 5% real fruit juice content. I should have known by the clear color that it wasn’t going to be as face-scrunchingly sweet as other bottle vodka drinks that I’ve tried. The sweetness and fruit flavor are subtle and work well together. Neither one overpowers the other and the result is nothing less than refreshing.

Filed under the ‘ready-to-go energy alcoholic drink,’ Mojo was designed and produced in Canada by Montreal-based Blue Spike Beverages who acted on a growing trend of alcohol-caffeine mixers (Red Bull and vodka anyone?). Mojo is infused with guarana, a South American berry containing a natural form of caffeine which does not contain ‘taurine’ the no-no ingredient in Red Bull that’s not supposed to be mixed with alcohol.

Concerns about mixing alcohol and energy drinks have caused quite a stir lately, especially after the U.S launch of Anheuser-Busch's "Spykes" beverage. The 12% alcohol beverage was being hailed as an alternative to hard liquor shots because the beverage was meant to be added to beer (if you can fathom such a crime). The only problem was, its cute, pocket-sized bottles (in flavors like hot chocolate, spicy mango and hot melons) were obviously designed to appeal to a younger crowd (remember, the drinking age is 21 down there). After only five months on the shelves and much bad press, the company canned the idea.

Like their vodka cooler counterparts, the sleek bottles of Mojo are adorned with flashy patterns and bright colors suggesting a par-tay in every bottle. However, unlike other alcohol-energy beverages, Mojo is very up-front about being a 'vodka' beverage.

If you’re sitting out on a hot day waiting for the BBQ, as I was, you just might find yourself grateful for the carbonation. My suggestion: pour yours into a glass over ice because a warm vodka beverage isn't doing anyone any favors. -L.D.

Although the drink was refereshing and tasted great. I was not impressed with it. It was my birthday and I bought some mojo and went to a house party. Everyone at the party couldnt open the drink. I had to asks a number of Men at the party to open the drink. No luck. Finally, after a number of people trying to open, using a variety of tools were finally got the drink opened. People had to start trying to open my drinks before I even finshed the first one. It was very challenging and very disappointing
