Ceramic Crinkle Cup

 t seems to be a brilliant concept: take something typically considered lowest-common-denominator and turn it into highly-coveted fashion. We’ve seen it happen countless times since Andy Warhol. A few years ago, Von Dutch capitalized on the Pharell Williams-induced campy hipness of trucker hats, turning the previously derided headwear into a must-have for everyone from Ashton Kutcher to your mom. Then there's the emergence of designer sweatpants (blech!), rubber boots, leaving the sticker on your baseball cap, and many many other examples.
Dutch designer Rob Brandt has obviously been paying attention to these trends. His newest creation, the Crinkle Cup, is designed to resemble a crinkled Dixie cup, but is actually molded out of ceramic.
Although it might seem as though Brandt has been taking a little too much advantage of Amsterdam’s lax drug laws, the imitation plastic coffee cup has actually created quite a stir. Brandt obviously has a knack for recognizing camp. Taking the transient item and casting it in a semi-permanent material, he has increased its desirability exponentially.
Of course, you could always just buy the actual plastic cups that they’re modeled after and save the extra cost, but that would be ignoring the true significance of the product. The beauty of the Crinkle Cup is that it’s inherently ironic, a perfect representation of the postmodern condition. After all, if not for irony, why would anyone want to wear a skinny tie or listen to Journey? Answer: they wouldn’t.
In addition to its worth as a great conversation piece, the Crinkle Cup is also perfect for coffee or beer in its ‘life sized’ 3 ½ inch model and espresso or sake in its miniature 2 1/3 inch model. Just be sure not to actually toss it after you use it; Crinkle Cups start at $10 a pop.

Great item. Invented by Revol of France (www.revol-porcelaine.fr), and re-glazed by Ceramic Artist Brandt. There is a paper plate/saucer that goes with it. Very Cool Item!
