Location: 1809 West 1st Avenue, Vancouver, BC
t 1st and Chestnut, in an area that Vancouverites refer to as Yorkville, there is a location that has spelled death for many a restaurant. Sienna, Vintropolis, and an Indian place (what was it called?) all shuttered quickly; last tenant, Industry, was in and out in a matter of months. Can the evil spell on 1809 West 1st Street be broken? The owners of the soon-to-open Mon Bella Bistoria are betting on it.
Mon Bella will be “the world’s first Bistoria,” according to Brad Roark, who co-owns the restaurant with Jay Brault. The two were last at Robson Street’s Tapastree (Brault’s the chef and Roark will lead the front of the house). The restaurant will be a combination of an Italian Trattoria and a French Bistro, featuring small plates, charcuterie and cheeses paired with Italian, French and BC wines. Ingredients will be sourced locally and Brault will feature “straightforward simple food." Don’t expect any wacky Italian/French fusion, there will be no spaghetti with boeuf bourguignon here.
If all goes to plan the doors will open September 10. Mon Bella Bistoria will serve starters from 4-5 pm and dinner from 5 pm. Brunch and lunch is planned for the near future.
This does indeed sound like the ticket to remove that evil spell. But I’d burn some sage and perform an exorcism just to be sure. -C.A.
