Location: 1835 West Fourth, Vancouver, BC
’ve been begging restaurateur Harry Kambolis (C, Raincity and Nu) to open a Greek restaurant with more modern food and atmosphere than the run-of-the-mill souvlakia slingers that currently line Vancouver’s Broadway and Fourth Ave. With his Greek heritage I thought if anyone could reinvent the shish kabob, he could. Well, Kambolis never did oblige, but the good news is others of real Greek heritage are now promising they will.
The families that own Olympia Pizza and the night clubs Celebrities and The Plaza have joined up with their relatives from Kits Billiards to take over the space at 1835 West Fourth. The location is between Cyprus and Burrard and displaces the India Grill. Owner Alex Graffos claims there will be no chicken souvlakia here. Instead we can expect inventive mezethes, the Greek word for share plates; in fact, the joint will be called Piato (the Greek word for plate).
Piato will have 60 seats with a separate lounge area and 12 to 15 seats around the bar. Gaffos has ordered the high-end Metaxa brandy and ouzo and is sourcing Greek wines that would make Dionysus proud. A mostly-European beer list, small cocktail program and BC and Italian wines will round out the drinking menu. Graffos is aiming for an October opening.
Could this finally be the Greek food that Vancouverites have been craving? If it is, I may just shoot down some ouzo, do a little belly dancing and shout opa! If its not I may just be throwing some plates. -C.A.
