Location: 1016 Cardero Street, Vancouver, BC

It's a tough feat, but the new neighbourhood spot Cardego Bottega has managed to break the laws of physics. Somehow when you go in, you know you're in Vancouver yet you feel like you're in New York. A lot of that comes from co-owner Tim Harris' experience as a chef in the Big Apple. Rather than taking inspiration from one of NYC's trendy mega-restaurants, though, Tim has found inspiration in the city's endless supply of Italian delicatessens.

Like a New York deli, this isn't a large space. As for the menu, it's pretty limited, serving cheeses, deli meats, pastas and drinks. But within these confines, there is a ton of variety. Sandwiches are made to order to ensure freshness and are given fun pet names. Choices like Jimmy the Greek, Caliente, and Gabagool fill the menu and are served with ample meat and condiments, each on a Portugese bun or panini. You can also get fancy accompaniments like marinated olives, sheep's milk cheese, breadsticks, and our personal favourite, wine sodas (don't worry, they're non-alcoholic). - R.T.
