Location: Georgia at Thurlow, Vancouver, BC
he Shangri-La Hotel, when completed, will be the city's tallest building, standing at 60 storeys high, and the 9th tallest building in Canada. Located on Georgia at Thurlow, the five-star hotel and its offices will take over the bottom 15 floors, with the space above serving as condominium space. The building will also be home to a spa, specialty grocery, sculpture garden curated by the Vancouver Art Gallery, and a private roof garden on the 61st floor. The new high-rise will be within blocks of the central business district and the upper-crust Robson Street shopping district.
Jointly developed by Vancouver-based Peterson Investment Group and
Westbank Projects, the project was originally slated for completion by September 2008. Construction issues have risen unexpectedly and consequently, the opening date has been pushed back to January 2009, though there is still enough leeway time to have the place up and running by the 2010 Winter Olympics. Shangri-La general manager Stephen Darling has also said that the delay was intentionally done to spare hotel guests from being disrupted by those living in the condos above. To ensure that visitors to Van aren’t barraged by boxes and furniture being carted by movers, the Shangri-La hopes to have condo dwellers moved in well before it gives out the keys to its luxurious hotel rooms.
The building itself is designed by James K.M. Cheng Architects and will include 120 hotel rooms, 227 live/work units and 66 private residential units with dedicated elevator service. The opulent new residential units range from $400,000 to $1 million for live/work units on floors 16 to 42, and $1.5 to $13 million for private-access residential units on the top eighteen floors overlooking the city and harbour.
The price tag of construction has been originally quoted at $250 million (CDN), pre-construction delays. | | |
