Location: 1399 7th Avenue West Vancouver, BC
ew cafés make the grade like Wicked at 7th and Hemlock. After biking by it a handful of times before Christmas, I finally took the time to stop and sample the coffee. I left four hours later. Since that day I have spent at least an hour or two at Wicked about four times per week. I can’t help it; no other café meets my needs like this one. It’s a perfect blend of unpretentious, glorious humanity. That is to say it draws all kinds. From the suits to students to hipsters to rednecks, Wicked loves us all.
To hear that there will be another café opening up downtown was sterling. While the exact location is still hush hush, I have an informed hunch it’ll be near the Robson and Hornby junction. I am relieved for the downtown set – the kind that never crosses the bridge to the Other Side. Now they’ll get a taste of Wicked, though this one will be a little different than the flagship.
According to Arthur, one of Wicked’s loyal staff and hands down the most strawberry barista in town, the new joint will have it all and then some. Not one, but two java machines will be running full tilt to serve the stand up espresso bar and the rest of the café. Ample seating will be available for those who choose to sip slowly, and according to Arthur the feel will be slightly more Euro and the focus on the java more intense.
All bean blends and roasts sold by the package will be sold by the cup as well, allowing customers to sample the wide variety of ethically produced coffee sold through the cafe. A professional tasting area may be on the horizon, which is in line with the owners’ (and Arthur’s) desire to educate the public’s palate. Now open. -S.H.
