Location: 3162 West Broadway, Vancouver, BC
n the space where Fiction last inhabited, there’s a brand new casual dining spot designed just for the Kitsilano – The New Bohemian. The name refers to the free wheeling style that the neighborhood is known for. An invention of Ivo Staiano (former owner of Balthazar and Urban Well) and Paul Gibbons (ex-Balthazar manager), this dining spot promises “fresh, quality organic food, finished with global flavours and ideals”.
A quick stop in pre-opening revealed the front of the house had a few things to accomplish, but the kitchen staff seemed relaxed and ready for the imminent opening. Chef Kevin Sanwell (also ex-Balthazar) plans to use local and seasonal ingredients to create dishes such as a free-range pork tenderloin with curried quinoa and pineapple chutney, Salt Spring Island mussels, and organic sirloin steaks with sweet potato mash.
With a tag line of “be hungry, be thirsty, be social”, this group just might bring us the restaurant that Kits has been missing. Quality food, a relaxed atmosphere and an unpretentious attitude, now doesn’t that sound practical? Throw on your Birkenstocks and head down. -C.A.
