Cambie Street's new store, Walrus, comes to you from Caroline Boquist and Daniel Kozlowski, alumni from Inform Interiors. The pair have been working together for five years, and finally decided to open up a store together because, Boquist says, they share "a passion for fun, well-designed items" and they didn't want to "regret not having done it."
The pair aim to create a space that is whimsical, creative, and engaging. The long, narrow store carries home décor pieces, books, art, and accessories. "We stock things that aren't yet available in Vancouver," Boquist says. Many items are sourced from overseas (Germany has strong representation) and from the United States, but local artists are also represented; Kasia Stromecki's photographs are available, as are Rexford Lavado's original, whimsical jewelry. (His paper-plane necklaces are utterly charming.) Other designers include New York's Adam Frank (miniature oil lamps) and Lorena Barrezueta (modern ceramics.)
Most of the items in the store are not behind glass (except for a few, more expensive items.) Boquist and Kozlowski hope to create a relaxed environment in which the customer can engage with the product, touching and examining the pieces unencumbered.
