he Toronto edition of Smokin' Grooves, 1996, featured Tribe Called Quest, Cypress Hill, the Fugees, Busta Rhymes, Ziggy Marley, and a host of others. I met Master T in the crowd and chatted briefly about vibes, whatever that meant. And then Michael Franti and Spearhead came on and I thought, "this vaguely incongruent, slightly angry act is a nice addition." Fast-forward 12 years and Franti et al are still churning out socially conscious fusion hop. It begs the question: whatever happened to Master T (doesn't it?). Expect dreads, causes, and a familiar scent in the air tonight and tomorrow at the Vogue Theatre.
