Nonetheless, the BlackBerry 9000 will definitely excite executives and technophiles, and further still, hopefully get a few iPhone hopefuls to reconsider their purchase. A larger screen (with improved resolution) will catch your eye at first, but one can’t forget about the 1 GB of on-board memory and an Intel XScale 624MHz processor (which trumps the iPhone, it must be said). The camera is still alleged to be 2 MP, although many have their fingers crossed for a 3.2 MP model. Last but not least, is the incorporation of 3G support that will have thousands shouting out in joy. The device will also be WiFi capable and sport GPS technology. So far, RIM has remained relatively mum on the product.
Reports have confirmed that RIM is working on a touch-screen for a future BlackBerry model, code named "BlackBerry AK", with the 'AK' standing for Apple Killer. The device would cater to a demographic of young and upwardly-mobile folk (no pun intended) who crave the sleek look of an iPhone mixed with the powerful capabilities of a BlackBerry. While the touch screen didn't happen this time, those in the industry say that RIM knows enough to act fast and give their customers some unique options. After all, the Waterloo-based company surely doesn’t want their precious BlackBerry to sour. As evidenced by statements from the company, RIM has revenue in mind and is pouring countless dollars and time into research, with developers currently working on a touch screen interface for the company (fingers crossed it's as user-friendly as the iPhones).
Remember, in your choice for a perfect RAZR-alternative, head to the fruit aisle (those T-Mobile Sidekicks will definitely date you). Speculation is still abuzz as to when the 9000 will hit shelves, but pundits predict you’ll see one as soon as this summer. Until then, corporate types should keep their thumbs tapping away in excitement, as the best is yet to come. Incidentally, you may want to make sure your insurance policy covers carpal tunnel. -D.C.,
