ew Year’s Eve to Scotsmen is an even bigger deal than Christmas to Christians. The kilted gents and lovely lasses have traditions galore regarding luck and the New Year that date back to Pagan times. One such tradition has to do with the first person to cross a house’s threshold after the clock strikes midnight. The luck of the entire year ahead is believed to be brought into the house with that first arrival. If the visitor bears gifts, the house will be prosperous. If he bears nothing....you get the gist. If we were to take a hint from the Scots, we would be smart to pay careful attention to the thresholds we cross as the ball drops at midnight. Someone’s entire future is resting in your hands. Consult our NYE Party Guide and pick your poison. –J.T.
