Geek to Chic - Tommy Lee and Me (part 1 of 3)

Every great journey begins with but a single step forward. Ships of yore required a good gust of wind to get underway. A dragster expends most of its energy at the starting line. Rocket ships don't fly into space; they actually explode. My personal transition from an uncouth geek into the pinnacle of what is chic and stylish should be no different. I'm a firm believer in the power of impetus so when I set out on the road to cool I intend to hit the ground running. Why dawdle in the shallows when I can dive into the deep end?

I didn't have long to wait for a suitable opportunity to present itself. As a feature writer for martiniboys.com, my name found its way onto the guest list at Tommy Lee's PG13 Party at Ultra Supper Club on trendy Queen Street West. The event - one of many that night in celebration of Toronto's International Film Festival - promised posh décor, hot crowds and a strong celebrity presence. A great place to see and be seen, and the perfect first step from which to launch myself into the nightlife arena.

When I think of what daily life must be like in LA for scenesters and celebs, I imagine something carefree yet exhilarating. In my head, these people already have it made; they're on cruise control in the fast lane and in no danger of missing their turnoff. For them it must be less about rushing from one place to the next and more about the appreciation of a moment. They don't have the concerns what plague an everyday existence. They eat out and sleep in, and everything in between is a playground.

How will I relate to these people? Will we have anything in common? Can I even speak their language?
