Ben Affleck To Star In Mike Judge's Latest
Ben Affleck is returning to Miramax, the company that made his career by backing his little screenplay known as
Good Will Hunting ("it's not your fault"). Now, he'll be appearing in Mike Judge's latest movie
Extract. Affleck will play an ambulance-chasing lawyer in a story about an eccentric flower-extract plant owner (Jason Bateman) with a streak of bad luck. Very little is known about the movie outside of that general plot description, but it is certainly enough rouse excitement. Bateman has officially entered into the upper echelon of great American comedic actors thanks to
Arrested Development and Ben Affleck has always been an underrated comic performer (see his collaborations with Kevin Smith and
Good Will Hunting for proof).
The actors are sure to be funny, but the man who will be most responsible for the success of the film will be Mike Judge. Judge has garnered incredible success on television with
Beavis And Butthead and
King Of The Hill, but he's never been able to his footing in Hollywood.
Office Space is a legitimate cult classic now, but bombed in it's theatrical run.
Idiocracy was a wonderfully subversive satire of the dumbed down contemporary America that was delayed for years before being dumped onto a handful a screens by 20th Century Fox without screening for critics. Both are great movies, but neither was given a chance to succeed by the studios. Hopefully the star power associated with
Extract will help guarantee a release and get the writer/director the success he deserves. Mike Judge's subtle, satirical, and sardonic wit has produced some of the most unique comedic creations of the last 15 years. It's about time that he finally got a chance to prove himself in Hollywood.
