Starters include a frenetically busy house salad (Mesclun greens with Chevre cheese, toasted hazelnuts and air dried blueberries) and an almost-as-busy Lobster Bisque, which was devoid of any real verve or flavour. While this seemed to suit the tourists from Seattle seated next to us, you'd fare better to try the Grilled Baby Brie, the Vine-Ripened Tomato Salad in basil leaves or the Grande Prairie bison carpaccio.
Among the best entrées is a divinely moist Alberta Prime Rib ($25.99) with a side of Yukon Gold, and unusually sweet creamed corn. Another must-try is the Grilled Lamb Trio ($33.95), served with fried mint gnocci and roasted tomatoes, and the Cornish hen, flanked by an Okanogan Merlot emulsion. While grilled red meat is clearly the chef's forté, another particularly good route to go is the Seared Atlantic Sea Scallops, served with a little mound of butternut squash-filled rotolo to add a touch of brightness.
Servers have been well-trained, although are obviously still not quite comfortable in the space. One dinner excursion featured a server so eccentric in his habits that it felt as if we were being filmed for some Candid Camera-esque reality show – he initially spent no less than 20 minutes skimming past the table avoiding our gazes, but when he did at last approach, he was breathless and was clearly in the weeds (paranoia perhaps?). Subsequent visits showed increasing increments of finesse.
All in all, the restaurant is immensely appealing. It adds something priceless, rare, awesome, and historic to our city—namely our unbelievable railway station redesigned in such a way that allows us to appreciate it in not just a historical, but now modern context. Those that may need stronger persuasion to buy into TransContinental's magic should peruse local TV listings for Shiny Time Station reruns (Thomas the Tank will also do), and let Conductor Ringo Starr show you the light. -R.L.

1 Reader Reviews | Unbelievable. I went to a "sports bar" and got more than I expected. This place had a high definition television in my booth! After catching the end of the Lions game(which was mostly blacked out....why?) my girlfriend asked if they could find a repeat of Canada's Next Top Model......and within 5 minutes it was on our television, in my booth....that's right, Canada's Next Top Model in a "sports bar"! The server was friendly and efficient (and I hope my girl doesn't see this, but HOT too). I ordered a pint of lager and the size of glass that was placed in front of me was suprising, easily one third larger than any joint along the Robson strip. Cold and refreshing, what else to say....its beer. My girlfriend struggled with the wine list for a while, because of the size, also suprising for a "sports bar". Eventually when she asked for a suggestion, the HOT server asked what she was considering for dinner? What the heck, wine pairings in a "sports bar"? Upon her reply of grilled salmon, the server suggested a local chardonnay i forget the name or Oyster Bay Sauv Blanc. Now I go out a fair bit and remember paying alot more for this glass of wine on the strip also. So far, so good, we ordered and enjoyed our drinks. They had a promotional appetizer deal so I tried the roast chicken and my girlfriend had the grilled salmon. For this we received a complimentary choice of appetizer and we picked the calamari. From the top, the calamari was good, tasty and the dipping sauce was unique and added to the taste. My roast chicken was HUGE and came with mashed potatoes and fresh, actually crispy, steamed vegetables and gravy....sorry "jus"....in a "sports bar", whatever it was really good. I tried my girlfriends salmon and it was grilled just right, it came with the same vegetables and mashed potatoes which was just fine. Oh but no "jus" this time, instead lemon butter, nice touch. Anyway we were stuffed and resisted the HOT server's attempt to impose dessert, especially recommended was the dark chocolate fondue.....in a "sports bar". We declined, but did see the dish pass by on the way to the patio shortly after, it looked tempting and smelled better. The patio seemed to have a bit more action on it, with a live DJ set up right there.....in a "sports bar". Overall the atmosphere was upbeat and fresh. I honestly have to say this was one of the better nights out for us in recent memory. It was fun, and my girlfriend enjoyed everything.......at a "sports bar"?
It took a while to get the check and pay......but she was HOT, so that's okay and it was starting to fill up after the game also. The manager thanked us on the way out and invited us back with another free appetizer card. That would not be necessary to get me back though. I would go without the TV in the booth, if the food was less impressive and the server not so HOT, but like I said I got more than I expected at a good value. Whatever else is going on, hockey game, bikini contest, would just add to the experience, so I'm there. So if you didn't get the "picture", this place is more that just a "sports bar". Check it out for sure, I can't wait for NFL and NHL to start.
