Turn of the 20th century rail travel was integral to the development of Canada’s culture. PM MacDonald’s dream of a country united A Mari Usque Ad Mare (from sea to sea) by the rail was eventually realized, though at the cost of many lives and hard labour. It is in homage to this history (and the physical location of the space) that the TransContinental was created.

In the space’s liberally and fantastically interpreted railway station, there is not a sedate or sterile square inch within the entire space. Dinner here is not so much like a night in a waiting station as a night on the Orient Express, as the restored space is a classic gem not unlike the interior of a museum.

Owner Eli Gershkovitch's vision to transform the retired Canadian Pacific Railway station into a classic dining space was realized when architects Soren Rasmussen and Malcolm Candler took on the project. By re-working the 7,500 square feet space, Gershkovitch (who also owns the Steamworks brew pub next door) has clearly attempted a monstrous undertaking.

Enter TransContinental and you're smacked with a space that has an air of majestic self-importance (much like Canada’s early 1890’s politicians). A grandness of ballroom proportions with fantastically high ceilings, art-deco gilding and elaborate arched windows are evidence enough of this (thank turn of the 20th century industrial tycoons). The wood- trimmed dining area showcases puffy booths and signature oil paintings, gently spoofing the rules of railway station-eria while simultaneously embracing them.

Executive chef Cale Price's menu is not one of uniform excellence, so a road map is in order. The entrées stick close to the standard steakhouse faves, which include the formulaic likes of Grilled Alberta Beef, salmon Filet and the ubiquitous Chicken Breast. Fortunately, it also includes a few less common dishes along with the option of a table d’hôte, which shows the kitchen has a care beyond the clichéd.

Unbelievable. I went to a "sports bar" and got more than I expected. This place had a high definition television in my booth! After catching the end of the Lions game(which was mostly blacked out....why?) my girlfriend asked if they could find a repeat of Canada's Next Top Model......and within 5 minutes it was on our television, in my booth....that's right, Canada's Next Top Model in a "sports bar"! The server was friendly and efficient (and I hope my girl doesn't see this, but HOT too). I ordered a pint of lager and the size of glass that was placed in front of me was suprising, easily one third larger than any joint along the Robson strip. Cold and refreshing, what else to say....its beer. My girlfriend struggled with the wine list for a while, because of the size, also suprising for a "sports bar". Eventually when she asked for a suggestion, the HOT server asked what she was considering for dinner? What the heck, wine pairings in a "sports bar"? Upon her reply of grilled salmon, the server suggested a local chardonnay i forget the name or Oyster Bay Sauv Blanc. Now I go out a fair bit and remember paying alot more for this glass of wine on the strip also. So far, so good, we ordered and enjoyed our drinks. They had a promotional appetizer deal so I tried the roast chicken and my girlfriend had the grilled salmon. For this we received a complimentary choice of appetizer and we picked the calamari. From the top, the calamari was good, tasty and the dipping sauce was unique and added to the taste. My roast chicken was HUGE and came with mashed potatoes and fresh, actually crispy, steamed vegetables and gravy....sorry "jus"....in a "sports bar", whatever it was really good. I tried my girlfriends salmon and it was grilled just right, it came with the same vegetables and mashed potatoes which was just fine. Oh but no "jus" this time, instead lemon butter, nice touch. Anyway we were stuffed and resisted the HOT server's attempt to impose dessert, especially recommended was the dark chocolate fondue.....in a "sports bar". We declined, but did see the dish pass by on the way to the patio shortly after, it looked tempting and smelled better. The patio seemed to have a bit more action on it, with a live DJ set up right there.....in a "sports bar". Overall the atmosphere was upbeat and fresh. I honestly have to say this was one of the better nights out for us in recent memory. It was fun, and my girlfriend enjoyed everything.......at a "sports bar"?
It took a while to get the check and pay......but she was HOT, so that's okay and it was starting to fill up after the game also. The manager thanked us on the way out and invited us back with another free appetizer card. That would not be necessary to get me back though. I would go without the TV in the booth, if the food was less impressive and the server not so HOT, but like I said I got more than I expected at a good value. Whatever else is going on, hockey game, bikini contest, would just add to the experience, so I'm there. So if you didn't get the "picture", this place is more that just a "sports bar". Check it out for sure, I can't wait for NFL and NHL to start.
