t’s official. Tapas are taking over the dining scene. The less expensive a la carte eating option arrives as a Japanese incarnation via the latest izakaya to open in Vancouver. The former Clove space has been taken over by Kodai Uno (Raku, Shiru-Bay Chopstick Café) and decked out with a bold red colour scheme and the occasional smattering of white tiles. The extensive wine menu is sure to draw locals that like to lounge and nosh on yummy Asian cuisine.
Toratatsu is located in the former spot where Clove used to live. Owned by the Uno family, this group of super-restaurateurs also own Shiru Bay Chopstick Café in Yaletown, and many others in Japan. The upbeat atmosphere and oh-so-funky décor sets it apart from other Japanese restos. Chef Kodai Uno remains authentic to traditional Japanese culture by returning to Japan for inspiration.
Menu offerings are strictly Japanese, not the typical Canadianized version that tastes half as good and costs twice as much. Try ebi-chili-mayo prawns, sashimi of the highest grade, pork and green onion sesame ponzu, or grilled miso sablefish. While the bar menu isn’t gigantically huge, the focus is really on the food, not cocktails (although there are a few interesting selections).
The key to this resto is a laid-back atmosphere with great food and service. The prices are reasonable, which is something else to get excited about. The Uno family clearly knows what they’re doing if they’ve successfully operated more than a few restaurants all over the world. Give them a shot, and they’ll give you a shot- of sake.
