everal pubs around town aim for an old Irish aura. While some attain mild blarney-and-Guinness success, others end up as repulsively tacky, Disney-style atrocities. Conversely, the most authentic of the lot, Gastown's The Irish Heather, has bragging rights.
Free flowing pints, decent food, and a clientele that one would gladly share a basket of chips with made the joint deservedly popular. So, when owner Sean Heather announced plans to move the Heather and its sisters, Shebeen whiskey bar and the Salty Tongue deli, pints were not raised by all.
The Heather et al now reside across the street from the old location. My favourite place to settle in is at the bar, though comfortable tables toward the back might be better for cool autumn nights. A huge copper wall gives the room an industrial feel and a glass chandelier adds a hint of glamour. Though pretty, it's not as cozy as the original and the question remains: is Vancouver ready for this modern a take on Ireland? So far, crowds have flocked in.
In my younger years I spent a fair bit of time in pubs and I tend to associate them with nachos, chicken wings, and cheap beer. Don't expect the familiar pub touchstones at the Heather. Here, the kitchen is in the capable hands of Colleen McClean who hails from Rare and Lumiere. She’s pushed the food well past decent. The bangers and double mash ($14) come with 3 tasty handmade pork sausages and flavourful sweet onion gravy. There are no chicken wings; instead McClean does a chicken in a Thai green curry on jasmine rice; it would put most Thai restaurants to shame. The fish and chips come light and crisp and there’s daily pasta and a bacon cheese burger for those looking for something more substantial.
This is definitely a top-notch watering hole, especially if you’re a whiskey fan. The list is deep and even includes a single malt from Japan. There’s a page or two of beers and, surprisingly for a pub, there’s also a pretty good wine card.

Not the best spot I have ever been to - BUT certainly the best in these parts. The place is old-school pub in the best sense of the term. They're not trying to be retro-hip or kitschy-cool. They're just there to serve good, stick to your ribs food.

Excellent beer and a wide selection..it's definitely not the place you go to get hammered and get all rowdy with your friends, but it's a nice place to go if you want to talk and not yell at people from across the table and just enjoy your evening and your drinks.
I went once to the old place, what a shame I didn't discover it 4 years ago when I arrived to this city. I went to the new place two days ago, beer is just as good but I wasn't too impressed with my fish and chips. They served snapper instead of cod, that's alright, but the snapper was dry and a bit tough around the edges. Portion size was good.

35+ min for food for a party of 20? seems reasonable to me, you're probably not the only customers there.
I like the new place, good food—nice kitchen too! Seems like the chef runs a tight ship. Wicked selection of drinks. that shorter bartender pours a mean guiness too!
My only point of contention would be the music, not a fan of that satellite radio thing, and the U2 painting... I mean, it's one thing to be working the Irish thing in there, but that seems to cheapen the decor a bit.

Good prices, great food, nice people. You can't ask for more. Slightly random location, but it's still a bar, so you can't complain about that.

The first time I ate at Irish Heather, I was hooked. The master Colleen McClean makes the most scrumptious meals. It has quickly become one of my favorite places to enjoy a great meal. It is by far a gem to be found in these parts. If your looking for a fun meal in a friendly environment with perfect service, look no further. Bon Appetit.

WORST PLACE IN VANCOUVER! NO atmosphere, RUDE service, LONG wait for food (35min+). Had a private room booked for a birthday party of 20 people. After four hours, some singing (no profanities) and over $1000 was spent the OWNER literally barged in and said "This is NOT A PUB. This is a restaurant. You can't be loud!". NO warning, NO diplomacy, NO decency. Needless to say we left right away with a sour taste in our mouths.
