affeine joints have sprouted like mushrooms after a summer thunderstorm, especially in the Kitsilano area. Despite its theatrical name (buttressed by an organic blend of java beans roasted twice weekly), what distinguishes The Elysian Room is an unsnobbish affability that accepts both neckties and piercings on an equal basis. And, more importantly, it boasts serious coffee.
Elysian Room churns out a signature blend of coffee with the help of a machine called the Clover 1, an innovative appliance that yields a clean cup of brew with full body and flavours that you’d expect in a high-end coffee. Operating the Clover is uncomplicated; a barista presses a button and a metal piston lowers inside the machine’s brewing chamber. With the coffee grounds on a mesh filter, hot water shoots in, mixing with the grounds. The procedure takes about 30 seconds. The shop also has a Synesso espresso machine for those that want regular espresso drinks.
The sipping space is accommodating and unassuming, with a small selection of tables with free wireless service. If you want to cut the buzz, the Tortilla wraps are large and scrumptious. Wheat-free and sugar-free baked goods are available.
Cozy, warm and comfortable, you’ll want to spend countless hours eating and online browsing here, but staff seem bent on moving people onward and outward. - R.L.
