ake your way inside Sonar, and you know instantly you've entered serious dance-club-eria for the masses. And of course, there is generally a line, a crowd waiting to be immersed in with a healthy underground sound. Without slicing the dance scene too thinly, you'd best know to expect throbbing music with a relentless beat, coming at you out of an extraordinary sound system, even better than the one Industry used to have. It's a big, healthy - albeit no frills - appointed space, with an entirely separate sound system and DJ.
Open Tuesday through Sunday, Sonar was designed to attract the international crowd that flocks to, say, Shine, but that wants more room to dance. Sonar, which already has a sizable slice of the upscale, young underground scene, brings in talent like Coldcut and Mr Scruff. For those of you not young and energetic, Sonar is still worth a trip just to see that you really can build a better mousetrap.
Sonar has become an internationally known joint that is not for everyone, and might make some of you a little mad. You might not get in one night. You might pay a lot for a drink. The music might annoy you. But, then you're not who the club wants anyway. So don't wait in line. Don't worry about looking beautiful. Don't worry about your maxed-out Visa card. Go to Chambar and have your shiny, little martini and don't think about it. - Ron Brill.
