    Hot as a plugged in curling iron, Sanafir injects zesty, tasty, life into the Granville strip. Mixing modern Western aesthetics with Arabian accents and warm, Egyptian hospitality, this it-spot revels in its exoticism.

    Sanafir, meaning “meeting place” in Arabic, is a bi-level restaurant adorned with handcrafted Egyptian amber urns, harem style draperies, and richly upholstered beds; as you know, nothing says romance like harems and beds. With 40-foot ceilings, handcrafted glass chandeliers, and gilt paintings, Sanafir exudes culture and style. The atmosphere is chic yet elegant, and offers a rare Eastern/Western fusion.

    The menu, simply divided into Chicken, Tuna, Beef, Prawn, Lamb, Scallop, Salmon, Pork, and Vegetarian selections, is diverse enough to placate, tempt, and ravish even the most fickle diner. For foreplay, try the Seared Coho Salmon Medallion topped with smoked bacon, monad lentils and candied carrot or try the Sautéed Thai Prawn with curry silvered almonds and braised Savoy cabbage before finishing off with the Tea Smoked Spring Salmon Fillet (includes lemongrass, cream lychee salsa and silvered coconut).
    Wash it all down with a glass of Stag’s Hollow Pinot Noir ($12) then top it all off with an exceptional Tapas Dessert ($9), which includes a Chocolate Fruit sushi Roll with too many treats to mention. It's one of the most satisfying full course meals available on Granville.

    Before you go, check out the upper level: a loft including lounge beds with vividly coloured silk pillows and drapes, that suggestively implants post-dinner ideas into your date's mind (I swear it's not a brothel; it's all for show). - L.H.

    Goodish service, nice to look at, warm, happy place to sit with friends. Food was spiced very well and all in all, great spot.

    Went for dinner last night to Sanifir for the first time & quite possibly the last. Not only do they not have a telephone listing in the yellow pages, they have absolutley no signage in from of the restaurant. If you have never been, and are trying to find the place, its impossible....Guess they don't need a sign because it's right next door to "Dare to Ware"- felt like I was on Pigalle Ave in Paris?

    Anway, we orderd the beef trio & shared the platter. Food was tasty enough but only somewhat warmish...not hot as it should be. Our server was pleasant enough but she paid no attention to us, which was a big boo boo on her part because I left a $5 tip instead of $15.

    I wanted another drink, and our server was busy chatting up the kitchen staff & bartender. She had no concept of the word "service"; but she definatley understood the concept of the word "ignore" There is no reason to come over to the table every 5 minutes...but at least check up on us. Lame service.

    Until last night, I have always claimed my worst dining experience occurred at the Opus in Yaletown. Not anymore! Last night at Sanafir was the absolute worst dining experience in the last 10 years of my life here in Vancouver. It started with our seating. We had a reservation for 7 however we were put at a table for 6. Realizing it was a tight fit, we were moved to a bed upstairs, where we ordered some drinks and discussed ordering food with our new server's assistance. Within 15 minutes after moving, the hostess advised we had to move again due to a private function that was occupying most of the upstairs. Our hostess was very nice about it. She told us a bottle of champagne would be waiting for us at our new table. Actually, a bottle of sparkling pinot noir was waiting for us at our new table, which was back downstairs. At the new table, we were greeted by a very nice server however, this is where the frustration really started to brew. Just when the group had figured out what dishes to order, our new server advised us that we could only order the tasting trios and platters. The bottom portion of the menu was not available to us, which is what we were planning to order. Very confusing. We eventually ordered, which was more of a chore than it should have been. The myopic dishes came out in varied stages. At one point, the server cleared our whole table thinking we were done. I had to remind him that we were expecting more dishes to arrive. The two vegetarians at our table ate last, as the vegetable dishes were the last to arrive. Actually, the prawn dishes would have been last, however the kitchen apparently misplaced the prawn order. That was it. I told the server to cancel the prawn order. The group was ready to leave. What a disappointment. Nothing that we ate stood out. The food was not memorable. Other than the chaotic food service, the music was very loud and the lighting was less than dim. If anything, this place is good for sitting at the bar having cocktails and maybe getting someone's telephone number. I do not recommend this place if you want to have a proper dinner or want to have an engaging conversation with your friends.

    I have visited this place several times over the past year plus.
    Arrive earlier than later.
    Grab a seat at the bar with a friend.
    great wine by the glass.
    delicious entrees/share plates arrive in 3 distinctive tasting portions.
    Surprisingly satisfying too.
    Attractive, knowledgeable servers;
    choice music. great lighting, truly awesome room.
    one of my constant favorites.

    Although the ambiance is stunning and the decor is out of this world - the food is bland and overrated.
