t is more than an eatery, more than an arts venue and definitely more than just a meeting place, it is the Rhizome Café. Stuffed into the now-defunct “Hatch Breakfast Parlour” space on the Main Street Strip, this rookie will try to serve up luscious vegetarian fare and with a bit of luck, do more.
Equipped with a small stage, DJ beooth, PA system for live music and other performances, all is in plain view after entering through the infamous large garage door at the storefront, which has also been revived into a solarium-type room. The purpose, owners hope, is that their little shop will bring the hood together and encourage workshops, jam sessions and other local events. One of the walls, for example, focuses solely on highlighting local artwork with a Mount Pleasant theme.
The name “Rhizome” derives from a root system plants use to spread themselves. Rhizome plants, instead of running downwards, run parallel to the earth and the plants shoot up to the surface to create what looks like several different plants. The café wants to provide the same system, not just being a root but to connect individuals by offering common ground for their existence.
Going on the herbivorous theme, they serve healthy and affordable meals. Made from fresh, local ingredients, served with the care you can only find in small, intimate diners also known as your second family.
Try the Ginger Carrot Soup ($5), light and hearty with a solid dose of the sweetness of carrots. Or, my kryptonite, the Roasted Pepper Hummus ($5.50), which has a kick that differs from the regular ol’ dish. The Quesadillas ($6.50) looked tasty and filling with the rice bowls and tofu dishes looking at-par with the deliciousness surrounding me.

5 Reader Reviews | The Rhizome is an interesting cafe to attend and I have enjoyed the ambiance and menu on previous occasions. However most recently, some friends and had a bad experience at this cafe.
Four or five of us came in on January 24, to have some late afternoon coffee and snacks and the cafe was empty. As we chatted some other acquaintances came in and decided to join us. In all we took up 13-14 seats in an otherwise empty cafe that could house more.
Towards the end, the manager approached us and told us that we should have booked the space we were in (Near the window) on a Tuesday or Wednesday night because that is the only time they can handle large group bookings.
We explained that we hadn't anticipated that many people coming together and that this was as much a surprise to us as it was to them. Regardless, the manager seemed very irritated, and said that our space was premium space and that the cafe normally charges a premium.
The server came by shortly after to reiterate what the manager had just said, interrupting our otherwise good afternoon.
Finally, as we came up to pay our bills, the server repeated the cafe's unhappiness to some of us.
We could understand if the cafe was busy, but it was not busy and we truly did not know that we would run into other people we knew. I asked the server what would happen if we had all come in and sat at different tables, and each table of strangers started talking to each other and became friends. Should we have had to do this on Tuesday night?
She rolled her eyes and said that the cafe needs to charge a premium to large groups. I answered that we all paid tips - though in retrospect, we shouldn't have.
Getting the message out once, while awkwardly placed, was enough. Receiving it from the staff repeatedly was unwarranted. I may come here alone, but I'll be damned if I start making friends or talking with people from other tables.

Hi!
Well, after only having been in your area for just under 7 days, I just did not get the time to pop into your place and get a feel of it!
Main problem was that I was in Vancouver on business, all of which was in downtown.
I remember looking wistfully at the Rhizome while walking from the Howard Johnson hotel, to catch the Skytrain at Main St!
Just the front of the place caught my attention (you know, the funky-ish paint scheme etc!).
As I write this, it si Sunday the 27th April, it's pouring down with rain and my flight out of BC is in the morning!
Who knows, I may be back very soon and will then make a date with you guys!
I'll carry a picture of the Rhizome in my mind, to London, UK, in the meantime! PS I gave you 4 star ratings anyway!

I hope this place sticks around. It marries all the things that I care about: vegetarian tasty food, politics, community, art, comfort, and happy owners/servers...I look forward to many visits there.

The food is excellent, the location is great, the atmosphere & space is huge & airy. I've dropped by later in the evening & they serve a wicked martini. Brunch is fantastic, one of the better I've had in the 'hood. I would highly recommend it. As well, they have a cool meeting space for various groups & different events happening throughout the month - make sure you get put onto their email distribution list!
