With all due respect to Autumn and the upcoming Winter season, it sucks. None of us like it - not even when we're spoiled with Van's temperate climate. But here we are, with October in our lap, we'll do anything we can to try to cling to the last days of summer. At the same time, there is something comforting about the chill in the air. Visions of cozy fireplaces, hot stoves, and home – with all of its heartwarming associations – come into play when frigid temperatures invade our comfort zone.
Winter is somehow bearable when we know we can escape it. And luckily, Pourhouse, Vancouver's newest culinary addendum, provides a bitterness-leave that is just as good as the paradigmatic home. Featuring a comfort food menu that toys with anything from Welsh rarebit and Pork and Beans (with white sausage chubs and white bean casserole) to neon squid, scallops and crispy pork belly in horseradish-applesauce and lobster ragout, this Gastown gastropub ventures into nostalgia without losing its connection to the present.
Complimenting its neo-comfort food menu is Pourhouse's saloon-inspired, industrial décor – exposed brick walls draw in warmth like a hearth and at the same time point to modern design convention, while classic studded bar stools and Victorian fabrics keep the pub rooted in its own long history.
Speaking of history, nothing goes better with a tale of yore than a good olfactory cocktail. Good thing then that - in the libations category - the eponymous Pourhouse certainly does not fall short. Personally, I believe the perfect match to any kind of lore is bartender Jay Jones's 'gold fashioned,' a sweet and sour mix of bourbon, maple syrup, D’oro (walnut wine), bitters, and orange and lemon zest. But you could always have a class of sweet yet dry sangria or one of the six hand-selected draft beers.
Tender stories, cold cocktails, and heartwarming fare are the makeup of a good life and a great restaurant. In this light, give Pourhouse a try, it might not make you rich but it will make you happy. – E.H

15 Reader Reviews | Incredibly poor value for what you pay. I ordered a meat dish that came with only that, a slab on meat on an otherwise naked plate. It's insulting to your customers to pigeon-hole them into ordering additional sides just to make up a decent plate of food. Our server was ok but definitely lacked even the simplest knowledge of the menu.

Horrible service ruins what is very good food and a cool hip atmosphere.

Good atmosphere - hip decor, hip crowd. Service was inattentive - you had to flag staff down to get attention. Food was underwhelming given the cost. Perhaps because service was slow, food wasn't served as quickly as planned by the kitchen. Overall, a nice evening out for a couple or two, but not overwhelmingly memorable.

Excellent food. Service is slow because main waiter was doing everything and he had half the tables in the place. Also, tables are on top of each other.

This was a bit of a disppointment. The food was fine - good quality sushi- but no better than the local joint on my corner where they have great specials. The service was awful - They attempted to clear plates we were still eating from, served one dessert before my friend even had a chance to look through the menu to see if she wanted one herself, took forever to bring our wine the ten steps from the bar to the table and dropped the check while we were still eating dessert. I had always wanted to try Bond and expected a great experience. I was hugely mistaken.

We had a great date night here. We ordered basically a little roster of small plates - all were great, nicely done with interesting sides. Split a bottle of wine. Great dinner...a bit pricey but the vibe made up for that.

We did have to wait about 30 minutes before being seated, even though we had a reservation. The place is fairly new, so that may have been why. That was really the only negative. Everything else was wonderful, and our server was fantastic!

I was quite disappointed by the interior design. With all the hype about this place, I thought they would do something different and create a place with soul... kind of like the way the Morrisey was redesigned. But alas, it's turned out to be another boring interior - very clean/new sort of like any Earls with a few unusual items thrown in.

We were seated promptly, but after we were offered drinks we saw no other service for quite a while. Service is very uneven at best. The noise level is brutal, and the room itself was very cold and a bit too dark. Not a pleasant experience

Love this place, been there a few times already. Food is great... service is attentive and superb! Love their avocado salad... Food is always freshly made, and I always leave so full that I cannot move!

Very snooty service. They have been around a short time and are already set in their ways. They were not listening when we asked them things, they just did it their way. I will not go back.

I read all the hype about this place and was so excited it opened. Unfortunately my friend and I were dissapointed. My friend ordered a ceasar ( poured from the big plastic bottle of Motts mix) it was served with out a salted rim or an olive/bean/celery to adorn it it was alos missing a straw or stir stick. My friend asked the waitress(who was excellent)about the drink she went to the bar and brought back a dish of olives...kind... but it didn't help the ceasar. Food- the chicken three ways was a wing a drum stick and 2 slices of chicken breast 2 pearl onions and a 1/4 cup of mashed potatoes- the quality was good but the portion size too small. My fries were tasty and so was my spinach salad again the portion of the dishes not too generous. We went to another lounge to have a bite to eat afterwards. If you are wondering about our size she is a size 4 and I'm a 14 both of us left hungry. I guess we could have ordered more but we didn't.

This place is great! I felt like I was at my uncle's house for the feast of the seven fishes. I felt so at home here! The staff just floats around the place - they really love what they do.
Overall, the food was exactly what I was looking for. The food is fresh and prepared simply so you can taste how fresh it is.
