ancouver owns the reputation of one of Canada's most laid-back cities. Rather than concrete urban revelry (which is best left to Toronto), Vancouver flourishes in environments of simple carelessness. It seems odd, then, that Donnelly Nightclubs' newest venture, Pop Opera, is one of the city's most hyped hotspots.
Pop Opera is neither careless nor laid-back. Pop Opera is a Los Angeles-style VIP-catering, get-as-hoed-up-as-you-can-in-order-to-get-in style nightclub. You don't go here to relax; you go here to dance, to drink, and to be seen.
Unless you like standing still for extended periods of time (who doesn't?) I would suggest getting onto a guest list. Once you've battled your way into the club and paid the cover, be prepared for a $5 coat check fee. My warnings should serve as heedless, though, since if you're heading to this club, you're probably willing to pay. It's all about the VIP experience here and if you're not willing to pay (or have someone pay for you) then you aren't a VIP. No, you're just a P.
The space, which is only open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, is geared towards the most fashionable club-goers. The design is all about flash, opulent to the point of gaudiness. Crafty patterns cover the bars and pillars, chandeliers hang from the ceilings, and massive lighting installations throw multi-coloured lights over the walls, the dance floor, and the hordes of partiers. The dance floor is absolutely massive, allowing sex-fuelled patrons to bump and grind on as large a scale as possible.
DJs play a mix of Hip Hop, R & B, and Top 40. Basically anything you might hear on a pop radio station, you'll hear at Pop Opera. It makes sense; the club is live-to-air every Friday on The Beat 94.5. Grab an expensive cocktail and a dance partner and get dancing. After all, that is what you're here for.

9 Reader Reviews | Run of the mill club. I read these comments... and, although we had a good time, I was somehow disappointed in the crowd.

Very nice venue inside, very clean. Music was good but Drinks are expensive and cover/coat check is too much for a city like vancouver.
I just got back n.y.c and cover and drinks special aren't as much as opera..

Bad experience. We arrived at 10:30 last Friday night and had to wait in line (in the rain) for 15 minutes (although the doorman was really nice about it). Not that a 15 minute wait is long, but when we were allowed in, there was about 25 people inside. I realize this practise of starting a line-up to make it look like you're busy is followed by a lot of clubs these days but give me break. If I am willing to come into your place of business and spend money, why would you want to make me wait to do it??? The $22 cover and $5 coat check fee are a joke. The top clubs in Vegas only charge $20, and this aint Vegas baby. Secondly, the washrooms are located on the other side of the dance floor, so when it got busy, we had to wade through a sea of people to take a piss. I will not be coming back.

I went to Pop Opera for the first time this past weekend. The night was fun and I really enjoyed the atmosphere. Both my boyfriend and I stayed until midnight and the place was packed! It definitely was a good looking crowd and there was an amazing DJ. Well worth the trip.

We arrived at 11 & didn't have to wait outside. The lineup to get a drink was irritatingly longer. The vibe is great - spacious & beautiful & decent music. The crowd is still sorting themselves out: Old Italian men! Would wait a while to return...but would definitely return.

It was a really good time. Drinks were expensive but it was elegantly decorated. Crowded but you could move, breathe and get a drink if you needed. All and all fun time, some cool people.

Yes... good article. But the place itself needs attention. We arrived at 11 & didn't have to wait outside. The lineup to get a drink was irritatingly longer. The ambiance is excellent - spacious & beautiful & decent music. The crowd is still sorting themselves out: Old Italian men! Would wait a while to return...but would definitely return.

Well written piece...and to those that no longer languish in the night life,...which btw has ALWAYS been present, provided your eyes & ears wide open...I have to say enjoy hearing that sleuthing venues still exist! Great read!!! ;-)

It's just another Granville club. Big budget, but they're all just gentrifying down into the same look, same feel. More originality please.
