Remember when Yaletown was more pedestrian friendly. There were bagel joints (remember Benny’s?), pizza parlours and the occasional high-end establishments. Over the years, the area has undergone major changes, with slick, new spots overtaking the quaint. The latest of which has knocked Soho Billiards on out of the way (the pool hall, by the way, is in more shiny digs at 1283 Hamilton Street).

With Plan B in place, the space is all sleek and chic with doses of warm tones and chocolate hues sprinkled liberally throughout the lounge. Cozy white leather seats now brighten the room, and an upholstered bar begs you to sit and drink. In fact, you could come in just for the drinkage, as there are plenty of innovative cocktails, bubbly treats and a fine wine list.

But it would really be a complete shame to miss out on Chef Ryan Zuvich’s culinary wizardry. Formerly at Bin 942, Plan B owners lured him back to town from a stint in London to man the stoves at the Homer Street restaurant. Good move, as this creative and uncompromising chef gets the details right, and his instincts are correct; the pan-roasted diver scallops with crisp Serrano ham ($17), for prime example, is a must. Scallops are seared perfectly on the outside, while still tender inside. The crisp texture of the ham and the accompanying artichoke chips were a well-thought-out contrast.

Also recommended is the yellow Chanterelle Risotto with cipollini onions and braised veal cheek garnish ($16.00). Also on Zuvich’s menu is the Alaskan Black cod with maple butternut squash risotto. Zuvich’s execution with this dish is flawless. The duck leg confit is served inventively, with bacon sherry dressing and tempura egg yolk. While the duck was an instant hit and it was a welcome adventure to crack the yolk so it oozed over the dish, I could have used a little less vinegar in the dressing.

Happily, dessert doesn't involve any complicated ordering. The hero item currently seems to be the Muscato poached pear, but there is also lemon with lavender milk foam and a tempting cheese selection on the card.

Fun place - food is good but not amazing compared to other restaurants in the area. Plates are small, however we were told that when we sat down so it was expected. Service was not that great. We waited 45 mins for the first dish and the waitress was purposely ignoring us. There was only 2 of us and we were getting pretty hungry at the 30min mark, so the dining experience starts to go downhill. DON'T ORDER THE SABLEFISH - IT IS TERRIBLE!!!

I've read the other reviews on this site and they all seem a little dated. So i decided to put my two bits in.
I eat at plan B fairly regularly and it's consistently fantastic. the portions are smaller then the bullshit you get at the cactus club but the quality is light years beyond. the food is well presented and creatively flavoured. From what I gather they use local and organic product wherever they can.

It amazes me that vancouverites would sooner go to one of these soul less chain factories then try the smaller BETTER restaurants that are all over vancouver. As for too expensive, nothing on the menu is over 18$. for this quality and effort that is rediculously low.

to the people that didn't like it, I say try it again.
if you still don't like it stay at joey's
I'm sure they will do just fine without you

We went as a group & were told that we couldn't be late, or they wouldn't have any tables, but the place was empty when we got there & pretty much stayed that way. We were told that being a group we could only reserve in the lounge, which meant sitting on stools at a small counter for over 2 hours, even though we were having drinks & a meal. The salad was creative, & the entree was tasty, but more the size of an appetizer. The service was attentive, but I left still hungry.

I eat out a lot and I have to say this is the best meal I've had in months. If you knew it when it was a pool hall, you'll especially appreciate the renovation. Very tastefully decorated without being pretentious. And the food! We tried four different dishes and all were EXCEPTIONAL. Portions are small (which is refreshing) so plan on 2-3 plates per person. jason

Meals are tiny, service is horrible, drinks are expensive. Nothing is new and innovative about this place. We went as a group of 20 and every single one of us was dissapointed. Service was disgusting - we had to wait almost an hour to order. At the end, I left no tip, and the bi*ch of a waitress had the nerve to come to my table as ask why - the only time she actually came without us have to go up and get her.

The service, food quality and ambience all score high marks. HOWEVER, the food portions are ridiculous. $19.00 for Alaskan Cod that is supposed to be for sharing when it is really for ONE person. The total bill was $323.00 for three people and you leave hungry. Stupid - just stupid! I will easily pay $100.00 per person for a meal but not when there is no value for money. Dont bother mentioning it to the management because they will just take off the $9.00 beet salad which wasnt enough for one person let alone three.
