s the steakhouse dead? Has it melted like that poor Hershey’s Kiss left out in the hot, unrelenting sun? Not a chance. With some of the hottest openings being updated steakhouses - Kobe Club, Primehouse New York, Prime and Tangerine Supper Club – steak is indeed a global trend that has picked up Vancouver in its wake. Scott Morison (of the Browns Restaurant Group) has picked up on the scent, and has taken over the abandoned LK Dining space to create Yaletown’s latest spot – Pinkys Steakhouse and Cocktail Lounge.
In order to do this effectively, Yaletown style, he pulled in designer Jillian Harris to rapidly transform the room. Plush leather banquettes, bar seats that cradle even larger back ends, custom tiling and details such as the “ROCKSTAR” neon sign above the kitchen come together to give the room a “welcome to my parlour” kind of feel.
Executive Chef Frank Lu has put together a fairly template steakhouse menu. Think Dungeness crab cakes ($15.00), coconut crusted prawns ($12.00) or the house-smoked salmon ($12.00). And don’t forget your veggie sides. Add a spinach salad with sautéed mushrooms or perhaps the tomato and yellow beet salad to your carnivorous main. This is the year for decadence, not malnutrition.
While the hot contender for global-steakhouse chic is the wildly popular American Kobe and Wagyu filets, Pinkys menu sticks to the more accessible cuts: wet-aged rib-eye and an organic, dry-aged prime strip. Dry-aged tends to be for the purist types, but I actually prefer wet-aged. And this version - wet-aged 21 days — is superb, with more texture than you usually get with a traditional steak, and a more subtle flavour that bespeaks a proper beefy quality. Other cuts - Sirloin, New York, filet, rib-eye, medallions – are offered from 7-22 ounces, with traditional sides a la carte. Order up broccoli and cheese, scallop potatoes, beer battered onion rings and yam fries to share.
On the drink side of things, if Pinkys is sub-titling itself a “cocktail bar”, I do think the program needs a little work to stand up to the level we have come to expect in this city. They’ve got a few classics listed, but it would be great to see more innovation. The wine program also has less listings than that of the other more pretentious steakhouses in town, but I can deal with this as the choices are wisely made. -C.A.

15 Reader Reviews | Not worth it. Great room but like run-of-the-mill steak fare that I have tried in the past, not up to snuff. I would go again but not to eat.

Poor service, we went at 6:30pm today. party of 8. no clean washrooms, run down interior (supposed to be new?!), ran out of beer and did not have any jumbo shrimps. Waiter was apologetic but for the price and quality of the food, suggest 100 other restaurants nearby that would qualify as top of class. Conclusion ....an overpriced pub , with cafteria food and quality

non-existent customer service
abhorrent layout
claustrophobia-inducing space
ugh ...just plain UGH
don't even get me started on their parking situation.
no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

Very under-whelming.
Pretentious and spacey service, unimpressive drinks, and a decent interior.
Went here with a bunch of people, squished into one of their booths, and had a few drinks. Left, and went elsewhere for dinner. The only good part of the night was the company - the company I'd gone in with. And left with.
Won't be going back, obv.

Our $$$! drinks could have been great if they had remembered to put alcohol in them. However, the prime strip was truly delicious. Sadly though, because the service was so sad, it's impossible for me to give a good rating, part of the purpose of dining out is the entire experience – and it was dismal at this restaurant

The service at Pinky's was horrible. We waited an hour for our food to arrive and I waited 20 min. for my second drink. Many of the items on the menu were spicy but this was not clearly indicated on their menu descriptions. As well, the music was your typical "boom boom" heavy bass stuff that you hear in every place in Vancouver these days and it played thru a bad sound system..it would have been better to have no music at all.
We complained about the service and menu items to the manager who did his best to handle the situation but I would not return to Pinky's.

Unfortunately I can't say that I was super impressed. The atmosphere was nice enough but the service was sooooooo slow! We were there for 2 hours and it wasn't like out meals were so huge that they took long to prepare. Our waitress just wasn't around, which was surprising because the place wasn't as busy as it could've been. Not only that but she got my boyfriend's drink wrong (it was a beer, not too difficult) and then never brought me the wine I ordered. Scattered, and unimpressive.

I wasn't impressed either. Budget beef cut, scattered service... and it was $$$! But, I'll give it another chance. I'll give it another shot. This place has potential.

Not even adequate. Service was rough, and the kitchen needs to be more consistent with their food. On one evening last week, I ordered a steak and it was great: nicely seasoned and fresh. But when I recently tried it this evening, it was brutal - wrong temperature, and tough.
It's too bad since I thought my search for a really good steak place was finally over. I might give it one more chance and hope for a better steak.
