The last time I sat at a table in a home-spun eatery out on The Main, I was there against my will. Well,I was intrigued to hear that well-known Kits restaurant, Nyala, had opened a sister location on Main Street. I had heard that they sometimes had drumming circles and cooking classes and had to find out more. Visiting a couple of weeks ago, I was anxious to check out the new digs.
Located just south of King Edward Street, tucked between clothing stores and other Main Street haunts, lies this simply laid out newbie on the block. The unassuming exterior, bare-boned interior and minimal design hides one of the most interesting menus I’ve come across recently.
Serving up African cuisine, this Ethiopian-owned gem has something on the menu for everyone. You can start with Vegetable Pakora, Humus, Sambussa, Boerewors Kabobs and Bilton (dried beef strips with awaze sauce) or a variety of innovative salads. The entrées range from Yedoro Watt (chicken marinated in lemon, butter, red pepper sauce and flavoured) and Yasa Watt (fish browned in oil, berbere sauce and flavoured) to Tikil Gomen (mixed veggies).
You can also order from the kids menu (a full meal with dessert) or the Chef’s Special Combination Platter, a vegetarian mix of appies and main course (no vegetarian choices contain dairy products or animal fat). Try the Tofu Stew ($11), with heaps of tofu “dressed up in costumes of” red pepper sauce, ginger, cardamom and garlic. It’s an experience in and of itself.
Finished off with a Stella Artois ($5.25) and Mango Ice Cream Cake ($5), which will knock your socks off. The drink menu is surprisingly extensive and the dessert choices varied: Homemade Cheesecake, Mud Pie, Baklava and a float. All sounded equally delicious.

It was my first time eating Ethiopian cuisine and it certainly won't be my last. All the food was tasty and offered the perfect variety of flavours, textures and colours. Sweet, spicy, sour, we had it all.
We started with the appetizer platter and the squid was deep fried to a mythical golden colour, the hummous was heavenly and the spicy mango chutney delivered a powerful wallop of taste. A spicy split pea and mushroom dish and a spinach and kale mixture were my favourite sides, the latter leaving a creamy spicy aftertaste which I've never experienced before. Next up was the lamb and chicken Tajine (a clay pot made by the owner himself) both served with yellow basmati rice infused with herbs and spices. The lamb was melt off the bone tender and the chicken still flowed with its natural juices. Lastly, the dessert you must try is the South African Brandy Tart. It's the kind of dessert that doesn't make you feel guilty, it makes you feel satisfied.
So although the food was simply divine, it is really the ambiance and atmosphere that moved me. The owner Asefah invests everything he has into this restaurant and it shows. He greets every table personally and takes the time to explain the ingredients/flavours of all the food (most of which he cooks himself) and serves you a little Vancouver history lesson on the side. He creates an atmosphere that can only be duplicated in the comfort of your own home during a family party or special occasion. And what that does is inspire good, honest and real communication amongst your table.
Nyala takes you back to the source of all that is good and beautiful in this world..INSPIRING!"

First of all I would never go back.
We walked in, the waitress made eye contact with me and then just walks pass me. We waited 5 mins b4 the own finally came to greet us. We had a party of 7.
We were seated promptly and water was provided. The lemon water was disgusting. You would think it'll take sour, our tasted bitter.
We were there for the dine out, but i asked for the regular menu as well. She said we only have two set menu now. i was like huh? I let that slide.
ok ok, i'll just tell you about the white waitress we had:
Her body language acted like we were bothering her.
She does not know the menu.
There was a freaking %15 service charge for party of 6 or more. This was not told to us when we made the reservation.
The food was ok but slow to come out. The clothe table napkin smells like oil as if someone washed it without soap. The rice smell kinda soapy. If you like everything way over cooked and mushed then this restaurant is for you.
Don't waste your $ here.

I really enjoyed the night, the place is really laid back. Enjoyed the towel service, look a little while to get the bill but the food was fantastic. Great vegetarian menu!
