rad Roark and Jay Brault's Mon Bella Bistoria is officially ready for its close-up. Hyped as "the world's first Bistoria," the infant little eatery has enjoyed hefty hype, becoming an area hot spot; hopefully you'll get the table you want (we did.).

During a soft-open week of new-spot madness, MBB received mixed though mostly positive reports. Co-owners, Roark and Chef Brault -- both formerly of Robson Street's Tapastree -- revamped the room, although traces of its former tenants remain. Previously, the 55-seat space has a sports bar vibe, via high tables and chairs. Now, seating, including banquettes, has an appropriate, regular height.
Roark has tastefully decorated the room with partner Michelle Vella's French and Italian photography and the pictures are a treat to study. Watching 300 of her works cycle through on a digital screen above the bar is particularly enthralling.
Whether pointing your attention toward the kitchen or dining room, the boys -- Brault in the former, Roark in the latter -- are whirling dervishes. This duo's incredibly hard work has already paid off.
So far, Mon Bella only offers a handful of main courses. Plates are meant for sharing, so assemble a foodie cabal. Be sure to start with salt cod fritters with garlic aioli ($8 for three). Made with the usual cod, but livened up by the addition of root veg, which thankfully tempers the saltiness. While the brushetta ($7) is basic, it's also tasty. Bella also has a daily crostini to keep bread fans interested.
