Eancouver’s bar community is swelling each year – they come and they go - but the offerings of bar food haven't quite kept pace. There are a handful of good little eateries that make a mean burger, but there are even more that don’t.
With Malone’s, they live by pizza, and while it may not be the best dough in town, the place serves up bubbly, yeasty, and uniform little pies. Friendly and eager-to-please staff await you from the very minute you enter until the time you leave. A non-judgmental staff is necessary for such an establishment that lies somewhere between sports pub to late night rock and roll venue.
Malone’s features a décor of neon beer signs, high ceilings, and plenty of room for serious drinking. Owned and operated by the same group that run the Cambie Bar and Hostel just down the street, Malone’s keeps in the tradition of offering both an upstairs hostel and a comfortable drinking establishment for all walks of life, from the Pre Madonna to the Panhandler.
The space is divided into two distinctive rooms for a bit of privacy, separated by a circular bar found in the middle of the space. This colossal bar is sadly understaffed and drink line-ups reach high levels of annoyance. On one side, Malone’s serves as the dining area, and simply plays host to those merely looking to relax and unwind.
Although, be warned: When the live music begins, the illusion of having two separate areas is quickly dispelled, as is conversation at a comfortable volume. The other half of the space features a blend of basic bar-styled benches, high tables, and of course a stage, fine for those who flock here to check out the live band performances.
