What’s old is new again at 869 Hamilton Street. The Italian Restaurant at this particular address, Villa del Lupo, has dropped the “Villa del” and is now known simply as Lupo. And it’s far more than just a name change; the place has had an entire revamp.
In 1990, Chef Gonzalez Perini was one of the founding partners of Villa del Lupo, but moved on to cook at West Van’s Beach House and most recently CinCin. Since then the restaurant had gone downhill. When the recent owners were forced to sell, Gonzalez paired with star sommelier and former CinCin colleague Michael Mameli and returned to scoop up the spot.
Gonzalez and Mameli have an eye for design and smartly decided to open up the space. Walls have been knocked down and the former dark paint is now a solid white. Modern lighting has been added, while clever artwork brings colour to the room. The lovely stained glass windows remain, as does the warming fireplace, but tablecloths are gone and the floors have been redone in a solid walnut. The building still reflects its 1800's birth era, but has been classily renovated, giving it a far more comfortable, neighbourhood feel.
Chef Gonzalez's menu is intelligently designed to make diners feel comfortable stopping in for a quick mid-week dinner or to linger longer over several courses. Antipasti include items such as pizzetta with prosciutto and caramelized onion, spinach and ricotta ravioli or grilled local scallop, while Primi might be veal cannelloni or risotto, and Secondi a lamb shank ossobucco or roasted arctic char. The priciest item is the generous plate of lamb chops at $26. Diners are encouraged to share the Contorni for the table. Lupo pays tribute to local food, but sticks to Italian tradition.
Mameli has put together a wine list of mainly Italian and BC Wines, rather than overshooting with a list that jumps far too freely around the world. There’s plenty of grappa, beers for sipping and a liquor selection that could accommodate most cocktail request. For now, Lupo is just open for dinner, with plans for brunch and lunch. There's also do an early evening pre-event menu priced at $28 for two courses and $27 for three. With a proximity to the theatres, it’s sure to be popular. With excellent food and a great space, Lupo's reasonable prices are just an added bonus. It certainly is a welcome change.

13 Reader Reviews | Had an incredible meal here. Server was fab and had excellent wine knowledge. We were are party of six, everyone had different entrees and really loved them (with the exception of the chicken - it "had too much dark meat"). We had such a good time - just wished that our table wasn't so close to another party - we felt like we had to really temper our conversation so as not to disturb them.
Really enjoyed it.

The service may have left a little to be desired, they were pleasant enough. The food was lovely - fairly extensive wine list too. I highly recommend the roasted arctic char - it was actually well seasoned instead of being overly salty.

Wow! I have a new favorite place to go downtown. My husband and I live in Yaletown and have grown bored with what it has to offer. We recently enjoyed an amazing dinner with friends at Lupo. I can see us having dinner there at least a few times a month (especially with the great price point they offer). We already have plans to take out of town friends and family to Lupo's house. Thank you for bringing such a great dining option to our neighborhood.

Loved Lupo. But I'm looking for great bbq chicken and waffles, corn bread, collard greens... that kind of thing. Southern Fare. I want to know if any one has been anywhere with this kind of food in Vancouver. It's not likely, but you never know!

I agree. Lupo is a gem. This restaurant is the best thing to happen to 869 Hamilton Street.

It is hard to find exellent italian cuisine in Vancouver, but Lupo definitley delivers. Excellent food, friendly and knowledgeable service and inviting atmosphere. I would highly recommend to all my friends.

Lupo is a gem among all the chain owned restaurants that are bland and lacking character. The food is delicious and is reminiscent of food we had in Italy last summer. The interior of the restaurant is both cozy and modern at the same time. The lambchops and squid ink pasta are to die for. Can't wait to go back again!

Superb food, wonderful service, and a friendly ambience. The bison special was amazing. This is a place to come back to time and time again, bring friends and family of all ages to enjoy high quality food without the accompaning high price.

I was at LUPO with 3 friends, 2 weeks ago on a busy friday night. our server new what he was talking about; his recommendation on the pastas were right on, the gnocchis were the best ever, short ribs were delicious... meat falling of the bones, perfectly seasoned, the pasta with stuffed squid and the risotto with wild mushrooms were also outstanding. Great wine list, great ambiance, great prices too...I will recommend this place to all my friends, and it will become one of my top 5...

Sub-par dining. I was hoping for a bit of energy here. But shall try again when they work out the kinks.

The service was mediocre at best; several different waiters and servers got our orders wrong more than once.
Don't make my mistake, do a few minutes of research instead of choosing the first place you see.

The food is not bad at Lupo, but there are better options nearby at the same prices. The service was mediocre at best; several different waiters and servers got our orders wrong more than once.

The bar service is passable and you get a proper drink (or at least I did). The wait staff is friendly and conversational. I'm not a big fan of the design, the layout is relatively straight forward. If you want to go for a bit of slumming or general laziness this fits the bill. It doesn't have the came charm as a good old fashioned dive bar but it has the same low class flavor.
