La Quercia is a modest little restaurant that serves up traditional Italian food. Sounds like nothing new. In fact, I could probably name you about ten off the top of my head right now. So why, then, is this one of the most buzzworthy restaurants in Vancouver?

The answer lies not in the concept or the design, but in the personnel. The chefs and co-proprietors, Adam Pegg and Lucais Syme, have already built up a good reputation and a loyal following despite the fact that this is their first restaurant. I should rephrase that. This is the first restaurant that they own. Before La Quercia, the two were involved in Parkside and La Buca, a pair of restaurants that have already proven themselves with good cooking and a dedicated staff.

And that's the concept of the restaurant. It's not a hard recipe; just take two established chefs, give them a kitchen, and let them do their thing. Don't worry about big extravagant designs or cheap gimmicks, just make sure that the food is good, and people will flock to eat there.

While living in Italy, Pegg learned all the traditional regional cooking and now he's looking to implant that authenticity into Vancouver. Even the tablecloths and cutlery are imported directly from his wife (and manager of the front end), Karin Lazzaris' hotel in Italy. It's is the closest you can get to Italy without purchasing a ticket.

This is not a place to go to be seen. It's all about simplicity. Hardwood floors and a couple of big windows are the focus of the restaurant's design. It's nothing fancy, just a quaint little restaurant. When I say "little," I mean it. The place only seats 30 people. That's in addition to the bar, which looks right into the kitchen but only fits two.

What a great spot! Everything from the food, to the service to the surprising intimacy of the room (it certainly doesn't feel like 4th Avenue from inside)is fantastic and at a reasonable price. Compared to a meal I had at Lumiere months passed the food does not compare but the other features make it a must in Vancouver. My girlfriend and I split the 5 course familia share plate and it was more than enough food (7 dishes). Would pick this over snobby yaletown anyday

Fantastic, and worth the wait! Prices are reasonable and the chef/owner dispells all the bad preconceptions we (sometimes) have about the Italians. A class act.

    Delicious!
very under the radar cool spot that you never would have realized was there (until you looked for Italian food on martiniboys). Nice staff, great food, and comfy atmosphere. You could walk by it a thousand times and never realize it held delicious Italian delights....

As far as Vancouver is concerned, La Quercia is my favourite dining spot. The cuisine is always crafted to perfection with a list of classic to the innovative off the menu selections. A delightful wine list and beautiful restaurant. I love to get away and relax knowing I will be taken care of and that the food will always be outstanding.

Pretty damn amazing. We showed up and there were many people in front of us but we were served right away in the bar area. Then our name was called in about 20 min. Service was on point and all the servers were dressed to the 9's, which was rad. Do it!

What a great little space. The food is prepared well and is so cheap it's ridiculous. I wish I still lived near this joint. I would have made it my regular grazing place.

Cute spot. The owner remembered us from having walking in two hours prior. The staff seem know their stuff, and all the tastings they offered were surprising in their own way. i would have loved to say for longer and have a glass or two but my time was limited. it's so lovely to see such a great place in such an unexpected area!
