f you think Vancouver couldn’t possibly handle another swanky drink and dinner spot, think again. Glowbal Restaurant Group (of Glowbal, Sanafir and Coast) has once again lured in the moneyed-crowds with their newest project, Italian Kitchen. Just off Burrard Street on Alberni, the place was immediately packed in its first few nights of business. Is it the sexy room that’s attracting the crowds? Perhaps initially. Either way, it’s evident that local foodies are ready to trade the chilly gusts off Pacific for the Mediterranean’s warm breezes and relaxed lifestyle.
Sleek and sexy is the premise of the 5,000 square foot restaurant, executed by Interior Box Designs. The main floor features a black and white theme with a 60-foot marble bar that provides front row seats of both the bartending talent and views into the adjacent open kitchen. Venture upstairs where the colours change to richer reds and you’ll find another bar and a front dining area with views to the street, giving diners additional opportunities for seating (and people watching).
While the room may initially draw the hip crowd in, the food and service will certainly bring them back. A good looking bunch, the attentive servers prove they know the menu and hang around just enough to ensure your wine glass is kept full, but not to the point where you feel that they have literally joined you at the table.
On the food side of the equation, Chef Ryan Gauthier (a Red Seal Chef, formerly at the Beach House) has crafted a menu that just begs to be shared. It’s family style comfort food here, much like you’d see at home tables in Italy prepared lovingly by Nona. Don’t miss the Antipasto Platter ($18 per person) that comes stacked with eggplant parmigiana, tempura-like Portobello wedges, oversized tiger prawns and burrata cheese stuffed zucchini blossoms; it’s a feast for both the eyes and the gullet.
Move on to hand crafted pizzas (try the Quattro-formaggio) or perhaps share a Pasta Platter for just $15 a head. The Kobe beef meatballs atop spaghetti, penne pomodoro and mushroom ravioli are a delight. There’s a meat platter too for more carnivorous sorts. To complete your dining experience, the drinks list boasts a great selection of international and select BC wines. If you’re just into some sipping, there’s also a cocktail list worth working your way through.

We had high expectations for Italian Kitchen, but unfortunately we were VERY disappointed. We made a reservation 6 days ahead to assure a good table for our group of 8. We started off at the bar and had a bottle of wine and cocktails and things were looking good. When they were ready to seat us we were informed that the table we reserved was not available and that our reservation did not specify that we wanted specific seating. They proceeded to tell us that we must be mistaken and it could not be their fault????????? OK! Apparently we are total idiots and their 20 year old hostess does not make mistakes!!
Anyway it just went down hill from there. The food is OVERPRICED Earls or Cactus Club food, in fact I believe that Earls is probably better. The seafood platter was lack luster and had little flavour, the steak was uneventful and the pasta was over cooked. The atmosphere is cramped and the decor is boring. Needless to say none of us will be back.
The worst thing of all is the attitude of the management. They act as though you are lucky to be there and you should just shut up and eat. Unbelievable!!!!!! So Save your money and go somewhere with good food and nice people. :)

Finally, a fantastic Italian restuarant that actually knows how to get it right!
This place has a great mix of foods and the service is fantastic.
Great atmosphere, fun place with some noise! I eat there for business lunches all the time. Prices are very reasonable too.
Definitely one of my favorites in Vancouver

This Saturday October 6, 2007 I along with 11 friends had reservations for 8:30pm for Italian Kitchen. We arrived at 8:30 and were told our table wasn't quite ready yet. Time passed and after about 20 minutes, we started to ask questions at which time the hostesses kept apolgizing and saying it would be soon. After 40 minutes of waiting, we were all quite upset and they brought everyone some champagne but with no answers or results. Finally, after waiting for 1 hour and 10 minutes, we were seated. We were given two plates of complimentary appetizers but at no time did a manager ever come and speak to us during this fiasco to apologize. In fact, I personally saw two managers watch us from the upstairs bar never once having the respect to come over and speak to us. I found the food to be lack lustre and bland, the atmosphere to be typical and most of all the service and management completely inadequate and impotent. The only bright spot was our server Jesse who really tried his best to make a terrible situation better. One common thread at our table was that we all cross paths with many people in our daily professional lives and none of us will ever recommend Italian Kitchen or ever return.

The food is good, but the deserts
The owner needs to be careful with the staff, he's only screaming to his employees, and the manager need to change his face, the one who was chef at the beach, he's always so angry, he needs to go back to the kitchen.
