    Would you like another motherpucker?”
“No thanks, I’ll try your banana hammock.”
It’s not often that customer service exchanges go this way, and then again, I wasn’t at the average Mount Pleasant establishment. No, I wasn’t visiting one of Vancouver’s famed porn dens or bath houses; thanks.

Located on Vancouver’s ‘Gore-Tex row’ of MEC, Taiga and all things rain, mountain, and snow proof, West Broadway’s Hennessey Dining Lounge provides the 'hood with a splash of uptown. It’s clear that money, time and design were invested in this dining room. Leather high-back chairs, Sweden-meets-Tokyo furniture, plus varnished cement floors make the medium-sized room (dining capacity: 75) look larger than it is. A stage sits at one end of the lounge. It’s a small outcrop with enough room for a drinks-only table, accompanying red cube ottomans, a DJ stand, and an antique Chinese cabinet. Regular weekly events like Sunday night improv and Wednesday night jazz must be intimate.

To compliment Hennessey's striking aesthetic, the staff is eye candy. Luckily, the service isn’t cavity sweet; it's more sass than (vapid) stare.

Kevin and Eduardo Roza-Peirera and Mersad Khatami espouse a multi-cultural ethos at Hennessey. “Vancouver’s so multicultural. We wanted the décor and food to represent that.” Chef David Hartono, previously of the Ordinary Café, Marriott Hotel, and River Rock, matched the philosophy of the Roza-Peireras and Khatami exactly. Hortano has worked under Italian, Indian, Greek and French chefs, so his approach to creating Westcoast dishes with global ingredients matched their fusion ideals.

Hennessey is a big disappointment. Although their website has the ability to lure food-lovers in, the six of us enthusiastically give it a thumbs-down.

From service to food, nothing was brilliant about Hennessey.

First, the server lacks knowledge of both service and the food. When asked if cheddar was served on the Burger, not only was she unfamiliar with their menu and food, she stopped taking all orders to run to the kitchen to find out about that cheese. Although she confirmed that is was indeed real Cheddar, our guest ended up with Jack. I asked for spring rolls, and she responded with a question of whether it would be the flautas. I repeated the Spring Rolls (as it was called on their menu) and she responded that the flautas were unavailable...then why ask me about them. Furthermore, she did not perform any food-check shortly after we received our orders and she disappeared for great lengths of time. It was apathetic non-service given to customers on a quiet Saturday evening during prime-time (this should have been our first clue).

Second, all their tapas were extremly over-cooked on the outside and undercooked on the inside. Take for example both the Coconut Prawns and the Meatballs, both had a burnt outer crust while being near raw in the middle...and cold. I suspect the cooks have the oil way too hot.

Whether you order the Spring Rolls, Yam Fries, Crab Cakes, or Prawns, you will be getting the same dipping sauce...plain mayonnaise. How unimaginative.

Hennessey is a great disappointment where the pretentiousness but amateur food certainly doesn't meet up with Vancouver's great gastronomic standards.

First off, thanks Miranda for the stereotype that everything in Mt Pleasant (or the east side) is awful (bath houses and porn stores?). You show a remarkably poor understanding of our city.

Now that I've got that out of the way, my wife and I tried Hennessey about a month ago. We showed up early and there was no problem getting a seat. The ambiance is a bit dark for me but I imagine it looks pretty cool at night.

Now on to the important stuff - the food. In one word: mouth-watering. It really was delicious. To start, we had some ribs and an asian influenced salad - delicious. I'm a burger guy (I know, I know) and the cognac burger was delicious. My wife really enjoyed her seafood - cooked perfectly and nicely presented. The food wasn't cheap but it was well worth it for the quality.

    Thanks,
    - M -

Finally had a chance to visit Hennessey, and I was pleasantly surpised at the ambience and service. I've been to several restaurant/lounges in Vancouver, and I must say that this is a place you don't want to miss. The management staff actually took the time to introduce themselves and make helpful recommendations regarding their vast menu items. The music on the weekends is superb. Great groove and very relaxing. This place is a must see. It definitely brings a new look to the area. Great job Hennessey! Keep up the good work.
